Biomedical Science - 2 years with thesis

Biotechnology - 1 year without thesis

If you were to pursue this degree not as a pathway to a dental school but as a way to start a career, which degree looks more promising to you?

The career opportunity listed under school websites is very similar at both schools. I have a hard time differentiating between the two programs except the thesis part. How important is having a thesis? Rush has the obvious benefit of completing the degree in just 1 yr, therefore cheaper, but does this benefit outweigh the experience of writing a thesis?

Note: I've done enough research on this topic on SDN but could not come to a conclusion. Please don't tell me to go hit the search button.

Are you trying to get into dental school or start a new career in biotech?

Being a dentist is my dream, but I can't afford dental school right now. So I am trying to get a career for now, then try again to go back to dental school when I can afford.

So does anyone know which program is better?

They will both essentially accomplish The same thing. I recommend the 2-year MBS w/thesis b/c it's linked to a dental school. But another factor you should consider is how much gpa repair you need. If you need a lot, then the 2-year will once again be the better choice. If you don't need much repair (already have a decent GPA 3.2+), then I would save the money and just do the 1 year. GL

I don't really need any GPA repair. My concern is whether one of these will provide better career opportunity than the other. I wouldn't rely too much on the linkage to dental school at Midwestern since getting an interview is different from getting accepted. Plus, it might not be another couple of years until I could afford dental school. I guess my question is how important is doing a thesis in getting a job in this field. Is the extra 1 year at Midwestern worth it?

No...a thesis is only important if you want to keep getting a PHD as an option. Research experience does help one get a job, but a thesis isn't necessary. During my masters, I did 3 credits of research instead, just so I could get some experience. In your situation, I would just pursue the 1-year then. GL

Why not just go to dental school on loans like 99% of dental students?

trust me, i would if I can. I'm not eligible for a loan since I'm not a US citizen. i need a US cosigner to get approved for a private loan, and I don't have one. I've asked around, but no one would do it. and I got accepted to the most expensive school.

I haven't given up on the idea of going to dental school though, I really hate to let this opportunity go. But i have to think about alternative options.

The Rush program is intense but it will definitely prepare you for med or dental school, a research job, or PhD program. If you want a job in the biotech field or in a lab, you can definitely get one by doing well in the program.

Also, if you're trying to earn money for dental school, biotech is NOT going to get you the $250,000+ that you need. Like everyone else, you will eventually need to take out loans for dental school and possibly for the masters program also.
