Midwestern Post Bacc vs. UMDNJ Post Bacc.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I I've also heard some negative things about Midwestern, being a newer program than UMDNJ's and all.

Negative things like what??

MWU is also in a nicer/safer area. I have heard good things for both programs. I think you will have the opportunity to take dental physiology and biochemistry with the dental class at UMDNJ. At MWU, you don't take classes with the dental school, but many classes are essentially the same and taught by the same faculty/department on campus (e.g. anatomy, physiology). You will be fine for dental school if you work hard for either program. Good luck!

I can see my classmates in the MA program here have already chimed in.

My suggestion would be to evaluate what's most important to you in terms of an area and what you want out of a program.

Think about your priorities and what you want out of a masters program: if getting in to dental school as fast as possible is your first priority or if you really want to be the most prepared for when you do eventually start dental school (also think about what "most prepared" means to you... whether it's taking classes WITH dental students or receiving a broader range of science classes like pathophysiology, neuroanatomy, pharmacology, nutritional biochemistry, biophysics, etc. so you're at least familiar with most of the science aspects that are going to be thrown at you during dental school), if a relatively safer area is important to you in terms of living, etc.

There are lots of things to weigh and it depends on the individual which is the right fit for you. If you have any specific questions about MWU MA program, feel free to PM me.

Hey Dividebyzero,

Have you heard any good news from midwestern cdm yet?

I wish good luck for you!

I go to umdnj gsbs...I personally think either program will get you into dental school as long as you do well. Arizona is definitely a nicer place to live in than Newark, NJ but I would go where its cheaper for you and just work hard, get some really really good grades and hope for the best. good luck

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I will definitely be thinking about those factors. and I will definitely be PM-ing you soon!

It's great to hear all the love from the MWU MA's! I had trouble finding what courses we would be taking during the program on the website. Can someone direct me to it?

Also, are there any UMDNJ MBS SDN-ers on the forum? I really would like to know your thoughts as well.

They are revamping the entire curriculum next year because this is the last year undergrads are here so everything is being scaled up to a real graduate level curriculum.

It's going to definitely be A LOT more work than what it's like this year - sorry to say. I'll see if I can't grab and post a copy here for you tomorrow.

EDIT: the link above is the curriculum we are going through this year - there are quite a few differences for next year's class.

Thanks Albuterol for your input! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of grading scale is it? Are there a lot of non-NJ residents in your program with you? and I'm a little concerned about registering for classes, since you can pick your own.
The grading scale varies depending on the class...some courses are straight up 90+ is an A others are curved to 85+ is an A. The courses arent that difficult as long as you stay on top of your work. Most of the students are from NJ, but there is definitely a good amount of people from out of state who stay at the on-campus dorms. Lastly, even though you pick your own classes you have to get them approved by an advisor first before you register for them. If they feel that is a poor schedule or too demanding/difficult (they want you to do well and get into medical/dental school) they will let you know that. I like the program, but like I said both MWU and UMDNJ will help you get into med/dent school as long as you do well in them. I would go to the cheaper school and save money.

If I'm reading the schedule correctly, after the core courses, you only need one elective to graduate?
