Hey all, I'm wondering how I should deal with this situation, and how to present it to med schools.
I currently have a PRN job as an EMT, which I really enjoy. I started the first week of January, this year.
As of the past few weeks, our union (which I am not active in nor do I care about) has a new contract with our hospital employer which stipulates that all PRN workers must work 2 shifts per pay period. This is different than when I started. When I started the job, the requirements were that I'd work 24 hours each month. This is a big problem, because I cannot guarantee that I will be able to meet the new requirements.
The issue is that PRN shifts are not available regularly when I am free to work. The job is providing first aid at a local arena during concerts and sporting events; the shift availability is determined by the event schedule. Many shifts are in the evening, which is when I have classes. There are weekend shifts and some daytime shifts, with which I had no issues meeting or exceeding my previous 24hrs/mo requirement, but I don't believe that I can reliably meet the requirements going forward.
I'm also sad because I was enjoying the opportunity to make use of my EMT license, and if I leave I will have difficulty finding a similar job.
On the other hand, I have been worried about the fact that I don't have any research on my resume, and I may have the opportunity to join a medical lab doing bench research, which sounds really cool. I would also continue clinical experience by volunteering at a local children's hospital AND making use of my EMT license by volunteering as an MA at a local underserved clinic taking vitals, conducting patient interviews, etc.
I'm worried this will look flaky to medical schools. My question is, should I leave the job or try to stay? If I do have to leave, do I put this on my AMCAS application, and if so, how do I explain the situation so that I don't look flaky?
