Hi everyone.

Alright, I'm ready for a fresh start this semester from my hideous past transcript record. Anywho, I would appreciate some advice to make sure that I'm on the right track to recovery.

First, I'm a senior with a gpa on current university transcript as a 2.972. (Not sure absolute total gpa b/c I need to obtain my transcripts from other 2 colleges - some classes not included on current transcript) There is an upward trend b/c my first few semesters back in 04' 05' were mostly C's and then dropped out a semester and received all F's.

Time in between, completed a CC diploma in surgical technology and currently working in the field

In 2010, I came back and only received 2 C+'s 1 in chem 1 lecture, other in am. govt. the rest are A's B's. However, I continued to get W's throughout transcript. Not b/c low grade in class, but b/c I'd drop about 2-3 weeks into it after realizing too much work with employment as well. (poor time management)

Recently diagnosed with ADHD and going to start Ritalin here soon and hopefully this will help.. Could've started last February but wanted to try without meds and patterns continue.

The plan is absolutely no more W's and stay ahead in classes - I've calculated so far, that if I continue on with a second degree in Biology, I can likely get my gpa up to 3.3 at the highest going full time until spring 2014. (again, this only includes university transcript until I get the others)

Currently only 1 volunteer activity, but will seek more within the next month. Any other advice? Can I apply June 2014 or does it look like I would need to wait another year or do a special master's program? Also plan to shadow and try to figure in time for research.

Also, how do you all spread out volunteer work? Should I do them all at once with longevity or do 6 months here and 6 months there?

Thanks much,

Mouthwash4hobo

Regarding applying for June 2014 or waiting until the next cycle, I think you should wait to see how you do in the classes over the next two years. If you can't break into the mid 3s, then at that point go for the SMP. If you're on the fence, you could always apply SMP and med school concurrently.

If you search this on the forums you're going to see the advice to apply broadly, which is a definite. Be willing to go DO.

Any idea what your science GPA is?

I'm not sure about my science gpa.. I still have quite a bit to go.

So far, I know math classes are A's and B's
physics was A's and B's
Biology was from 2006 and C's and B's .. I plan to retake those 2
Basically all A's and B's except for C+ is chem lecture and to be included was my 2005 drop out year.. chem 1/lab were F's because, well I quit going to school half way through the semester.

I don't know how many credits you have completed, but I was able to raise my GPA from a 2.65 to 3.28 in one calendar year (summer, fall, and spring semester) through a combination of retakes (12 credits) and new science classes (24 credits). I now have 157 total credits (121 UG, 36 PB).

If you do well on the MCAT, a low GPA (~3.3) will be good enough to give you a good chance at most DO schools. Work hard over the next year and apply in June 2014, or June 2013 if you want.
