What is the process to become a military doctor? I know almost nothing on the subject. Does the different branches have their own medical schools? If so I'd be interested in how it works compared to the civilian world.

All branches have one medical school. USUHS in Bethesda, MD. They each have individual scholarship programs (including the public health service) and different loan repayment programs. there is also the option of doing ROTC at a regular 4-year instituion, in which case everything is still paid for, you just owe time afterwards (much like the typical commissioning programs available). Most of the docs I met while I was in the Air Force all went this route.

For civilian med schools, it's call the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), and many HPSPs were ROTC in undergrad also. In terms of payback it is similar, but the specifics are very different. As said before, see the Military med forum and read all the stickies for more info.

Take it with a grain of salt. The malcontents seem to gravitate here. I was an active duty pharmacist for a while, had many physician friends and no one was as disgruntled as those guys. I am headed to USUHS this fall and plan on making a career out of it. Read all the posts in the mil med section any way- they have some valid points to consider before making the leap. Recruiters are not good sources of information. They are not docs, so they haven't lived the life they are selling you.
