Military residency ? from a MS1

I was just commissioned last Friday after I received a four-year HPSP scholarship. My question is how difficult is it to secure a spot in either general or orthopedic surgery. I decided to go with the army based on the larger number of surgeons that they produce, however I wondered how the competition compared to civilian residencies. Thanks for your help🙂 😎

In a previous post someone put a link to the army's match list. On this list it gives the percentages for people who received their first through fifth chose. Pardon my ignorance but is this their chose in location or specialty, which is a world of difference. thanks

You may notice for example seventeen people chose to specialize in orthopedics and seventeen were matched in orthopedics. The percentages are what concern me, if they are in reference to the percentage of people receiving their first chose based on location then I can live with that, but if it is in reference to specialty then I am concerned.😕 😎

looking at the link and from other research i've done, i'd assume (yes, assuing is dangerous...) that the 68% of people who got their first choice got their first choice residency (meaning location AND specialty). for instance, if i applied for emergency medicine, there are 3 locations for that. i would list those as my first, second, and third choices. based on the stats, i'd have about an 87% chance of getting into one of those 3. but i might not get my first choice location in emergency medicine. if my first choice was SAUSHEC, they only have 2 slots. i might not get that one. but i'd very likely get into an EM residency. just my 2 cents and i might be wrong, but that's the impression i get looking at the information out there.
