Hi folks,

Do any of you recommend mindfulness/meditation and similar techniques such as breathing exercises/progressive relaxation techniques to patients? Is there any robust literature on these techniques for various psychiatric conditions?

I'd recommend checking out Barlow's (2018) Unified Protocol for the Emotional Disorders. It's an innovative, integrative CBT with a mindfulness component.

Progressive relaxation which, was its own behavior therapy, and breathing re-training are principal components of mindfulness-based CBT and prolonged exposure. The linked therapies are all evidence-based. Also, of course, DBT has a mindfulness component as well.

One of the reasons I'm drawn more to hypnosis, the Ericksonian form, is the tailoring of these rituals into what the patient believes is valuable. For instance, I have many patients who roll their eyes when I mention "box breathing" but get excited if I urge them to become absorbed into their thing (e.g., rock-rock climbing, yoga, trance music, etc).

Very interesting. So is box breathing actually beneficial? I do a form of it, except I prefer a longer exhale than what is typical. Feels good, but not sure what its actually doing or what the science is behind it.

Edit: before someone tries to accuse me or reports me like last time, I'm not asking for medical advice. This is an intellectual conversation.
