I am searching for verification. Answers on the internet have been mixed and elusive.

I have heard that the GPA minimum is 2.8 for AMCAS... Does this mean that one simply would not be able to apply to medical school without having a cumulative GPA of 2.8?

Is there a minimum GPA for applying DO?

Thank you.

AMCAS and AACOMAS simply calculate GPA. They have nothing, repeat, nothing to do with setting any sort of minimums. It is up to each individual medical school to set its own admission criteria

I will say that on the surface, have less than a 2.8 without a significant story, upward trend, or PostBacc/SMP would make an applicant unviable for medical school

Thank you! I got through three-quarters of an art degree 10 years ago: GPA 1.4ish....I am about to complete my third year of 4.0 work toward a BS in Psych. So, my upward trend is pretty tidy, but a piecemeal post-bacc is still likely in my future. It takes a lot of work to buff up such a weak GPA accumulated over such a stretch of time. My "story" is also likely more than sufficient, but I won't bore you with that here. My stats are highly unusual, so there isn't a lot of information for applicants like me.

I see that I made a mistake while reviewing the admissions requirements for my undergrad's affiliate medical school. They were less than clear in their wording.

You may have a strong especially if there is significant time between the 2 degrees, gimme the full rundown here

Well, to be clear, I never finished my art degree. I was riding a talent-based scholarship, and the school kept me on the basis of my portfolio. I had to leave the school and, subsequently, the city in order to escape an abusive relationship. Public record may or may not show the details of my circumstance; there was never a trial, nor were arrests made, but there was definitely an intervening law enforcement presence. I don't know if that matters. It took work to get back on track. Eventually, the trauma was spun into strength, and I moved on with my life.

Between that years-long debacle and my current situation, I cooked in a professional kitchen. Hard, a**-kicking work, which taught me more about life than any of the of idle philosophizing emphasized in my fine arts foray.

I reentered the academic scene, and decided to do extremely well. I have taken twenty-five classes, all A's. I have also been working full-time in the food service industry; I just turned in my notice (last day is in less than a month) so that I can devote my free time to ECs.

I will be taking the MCAT in the Fall... I started studying in March; I plan to do well.

Currently my GPA sits at about a 2.5... It will likely never get above a 3.0, unless I am rejected by all schools in each of the next three cycles, and spend the interims accruing more As. My science GPA is 4.0

I have spoken to a number of intelligent people in the medical community (none of whom have ever sat on an admissions committee) Some people seem to think my comeback is pretty neat, and that adcoms will see it as an indication of my dedication. Others are thrown off by the low numbers and wide dissonance, and don't seem very convinced that anyone would see past my early issues.

It's interesting to be doing this without knowing at all what to expect. Disconcerting, but interesting.

I have spent the majority of my advising career working with nontraditional students, often those with very checkered pasts. Your story will sell. My word of advice to you is to utterly ignore your over GPA. Stop worrying about.
This is excellent news, and your expertise is very appreciated.
