What is the absolute minimum temperature that an IV can be infused? We had one nurse here bitching that we didn't take out the TPN from the refrigerator fast enough and now she has to let it warm up before she administers it. (Refrigerator is usually around 36-44F).

Then again, we had another nurse who just took the TPN out of my hands and hung it up while it was cold.

NS freezes at about 30 degrees Fahrenheit, so that would be the minimum temperature because otherwise, it would be in the solid phase. 😛

If it's infused slowly enough, it can be hung straight out of the refrigerator although it might be a bit uncomfortable at first.

IV bag temperature is the patient's preference, usually. So if the nurse wanted the bag warmer, because the patient wanted it warmer, then the nurse should have called you or made the effort to inform you before complaining about it.

I've been given cold infusions before, I think it all depends on patient preference. My first ever infusion was actually cold and it freaked me out. I asked the nurse about it and she said the drug is refrigerated and that it's just how it is.

You guys seem to have lots of issues with the nursing staff.

It's a pretty dysfunctional place. There are love triangles all over this frikkin hospital. There was this one transporter who used to work here who has a girlfriend who is a nurse in the psych ward, meanwhile he impregnated another nurse on the psych ward. And the two nurses have no idea that he is dating both at the same time.

But, it's a 2 minute drive from my house and it's a union job.

There is always drama in hospitals! It's both one of my favorite and least favorite things (depending on the situation) about working in a hospital. Some of the soap opera-esque events are truly unbelievable.

Apparently, now me and the other pharmacist who work afternoons-evenings are the administration's favorites. The clinical pharm and secretary tell us stories about the BS that goes on during the daytime and all the different personalities floating around in the pharmacy. They say it's because we have too much estrogen floating around during the day shift. Watching the day shifters argue about who goes to lunch at what time is hilarious.
