"Minority Applicants are students applying to school who are from racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented or are economically disadvantaged" (quoted from the AAO site)

so basically just prove that you have no cash in your bank account, or that there are not enough of your kind around

I disagree- if you're a poor white guy or girl, I don't think you should put on the application that you're a "Minority Applicant"- the opt schools probably won't take that too well when you show up for the interview. I would only check it if you're Asian, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Arab, etc...

I'm Asian, and I DID NOT say I was a "Minority Applicant." I got in and I'll be starting in the fall semester. Anyways, I would be dis-honored and feel ashamed if I got accepted because of the "special consideration" that was given to me because my kind is a minority.

actually, there are so many asians in certain parts of the world, that they cannot be considered a minority... i'm guessing the status is best suited for those who live in a welfare infested locale

in optometry school asians are not under-represented, but are still considered minorities. The under-represented at UH are african americans. We're getting better with the hispanic enrollment. 🙂

I personally don't think the question should even be asked on the application-each applicant should be judged by their qualifications/experience and not their race. I was just disagreeing with DrBizzaro who implied that you could consider yourself a minority if you are economically disadvantaged- but I don't think the schools will look at it that way if someone was white and economically disadvantaged. I was raised by a single mom that worked in a factory to raise three kids and neither my mother or father went to college- I was economically disadvantaged, but I could not legitimately indicate on the application that I was a minority applicant when I applied.

I always thought there are quite a bit of Asians in Optometry school!.. hmm.. I'm Asian but for some reasons.. being a "Minority Applicant" sounds a bit old.. I mean. "Underrepresented"?? is there any differences when you are a "minority applicant" when you are applying to OD school?
