I'm going to be a college freshmen this fall and I had two questions..

1. How difficult is it to study abroad? I've heard that as a pre-med, it's almost impossible.

2. Has anyone used any books they thought were particularly useful (that's not MCAT related)? For instance, one person on this site a long time ago suggested, "What Smart Students Know." Is it important to get a book for writing term papers? If so, which book?

Look at your local college book store for the useful books. One of the clerks working there should know where to point you. Just bring your list.

Answer to your first question - it depends on your undergrad school. I went to a smallish liberal arts school and about 1/2 of the student body does at least one term abroad and some do more. I did one in italy and it was great. I highly recommend it.

1. Impossible? Who said that? It depends on how much you want it. I spent 7 months in Japan (spring and summer) during my soph year. The catch is, I had to take an extra semester to graduate. (4.5 years) So? I applied a year later than I would have. I'm glad I took that time. It might be impossible if you want to take certain courses in a certain sequence, with nothing in summers, at a smaller school with fewer sections of classes, and grad in 4 years. Certainly your school won't stop you. How can they? The correct procedure is to tell your advisor, "Yo, I'll be in [insert country] next semester, FYI." If you go to a school where you need some sort of permission... well, I'd transfer now before it's too late.

2. Cool down, my son. Study hard, play hard, rock the MCAT, and all will be well. If you're worried about your writing, buy a style and usage handbook.

i think spring sophomore year and the next summer are the best times to go abroad for premeds. you will only have to play marginal catchup: like take ochem II your junior year or something

thanks for the site btw.

for most of your study abroad opportunities, was it in the language you were studying or in the field of medicine? i was more interested in doing the latter and was wondering whether there were would be opportunities or not. i work on the trimester system (carleton college). Thanks again-

I studied abroad at Oxford my entire junior year and didn't take a single science class while there. I also majored in economics...so believe me you don't have to be a science junkie!

a thought on my study abroad; the spanish i picked up after 6 months in spain will be far more beneficial to me as a doctor than the additional science courses i could have taken at my US university. i think med schools see this as well, and if not, you can point it out in your ps, interview, etc.
