I am currently a third-year and was wondering if there is any spot on the residency application where you have to include information about any misdemeanors. My state doesn't allow you to expunge/seal these so they stay on your record. I guess I'm a little nervous about it come time to apply for residency as I have one on my record.

There wasn't any thing on eras about misdemeanors. Only felonies.

Hell, where I come from lack of a misdemeanor means you must not be much fun to hang out with!

I wouldn't worry about it. It's a felony that will screw you.

Thanks for the replies. Just got a little crazy after an exam first year of med school, no dui or anything though.

It won't screw you out of ERAS (see other replies) but for most states, when you get licensed, you'll have to explain everything over a traffic ticket. So, if you got something that was a downgrade from an alcohol offense or something that suggests something like that, it would potentially be a LOT of explaining.

Sort of a formality. 😉 A misdemeaner will be no problem.

It is very important to remember that once you volunteer that information, it will follow you around for the rest of your career. Since you state is being a bastard about this, then you have to admit this whenever it is asked of you, otherwise it will become a huge deal down the road.

You do not have to tell anyone about misdamenors EVER!!! You are only required by law to tell if you have had a felony. I wouldn't tell a soul.

of course anyone can require a background check for employment, but I have not encountered a single question about misdemeanors anywhere in my residency search process, and I don't think that a program would not employ you after matching for something irrelevent to medical care.
