Miss Michigan... not the sharpest knife in the drawer

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Then we'd have more dudes like the RPh in Canada stuffing Levonorgestrel into their girlfriends' vaginas... no good.

I'd say make it OTC, but there are so many hormonal involvements with any type of birth control that at least an offer of counseling really is essential.

Some context w/ Miss Michigan's reply would be useful. Because to an average Joe, needing a prescription = controlled... in the strictest sense of the word, it is controlled, as compared to condoms which are not.

she was hot tho.

Yeah, I tried to defend her statement, but no, I can't. I mean, to most people when they hear the phrase 'controlled substance', they think of Valium, Adderall, or Xanax. I doubt anyone thinks Yaz, NuvaRing, or Mirena is a controlled substance. But on the up side, she's really pretty.

*sighs* Yeah, but there are some intelligent women who compete and technically it's a scholarship competition. 🙄 But usually the smarter women are ruled out in the beginning... Maybe due to less poise and confidence, but apparently this one, Miss Michigan, sort of fell during the pageant, so...

Arab American.....I think helped her win more than the other 4 blondes.

Been there and done that! 👍

During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it's costly.

"I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it's a controlled substance," Fakih said.

OMG, I chucked a throw pillow at the TV when I heard that. She would be really surprised to find out it would be in the same class as cocaine, etc. No matter how pretty she is, she is still a complete *****.

A smarter, though somewhat dumbed-down audience appropriate answer would have been: Eliminate the double standards. If health insurance covers Viagra (which is more costly than most generic birth control) then they should cover birth control because pregnancy and children are REALLY expensive. And there would be less teen moms dropping out of high school and instead going on to pursue education and careers which would advance the female gender. yay.

That answer would've been too hard of a statement for the average pageant girl to form. What happened to the women who are beautiful and able to debate or form complete thoughts. Last year, it was Carrie Prejean who at least tried to form an opinion. Unfortunately for her, it wasn't the one everyone wanted to hear. And this year, it's one who doesn't even know what a controlled substance is or at least didn't even say the phrase 'prescription-only'.

I don't see a double standard ... Viagra is correcting a dysfunction of the body -- birth control does not correct a dysfunction (if used for actual birth control). In any case, a lot of insurances do not cover Viagra and when they do, it is often still more expensive than cash price for BC.

I agree with the pregnancy and children aspect, however. 🙂

Jesus...no wonder the Arabs make their women cover up their entire bodies. If they are all as hot as Miss Michigan, we'd steal all of their women...

Lebanese women are probably the hottest on Earth. It's that whole thing about the Mediterranean, East/West mix thing. Kinda of like mixing a Greek/Roman with an Indian.

Oh yeah, I rolled my eyes at that quote, too. Silly civilians.

It's preventative medicine. In fact, if someone would have serious complications from a pregnancy, you could even consider it to be preventing a medical condition. Sure, there are other ways to prevent pregnancy, but you could also lower cholesterol by going vegan and statins are still covered. 🙂

That's why I say make it behind-the-counter.

I think the OP is just bitter that Miss Michigan is considered by most to be more attractive then she is. Its interesting how when people are jealous of others they start grasping at straws trying to find anything to tear them down. Oh, and I think it is entirely possible that she may have misspoke i mean controlled substance and birth control, i can see how she could have gotten them confused.

Agreed. However, my point was the two medications are very different and it's hard to say there is a double standard when the two medications are used for very different reasons. I suspect some of the more paranoid women believe that there is a double standard because society doesn't care about them as much as they care about men. I do not believe those are the movtivations for not covering BC.

Regardless, it's a lot easier to pay for BC than it is for Viagra or Cialis, insurance or no.
