Hey guys, had a quick question. I'm currently an intern at a categorical anesthesia program. I recently missed 6 weeks because of a medical issue and needed to use fmla leave. Will that invariably extend my residency, or is there a way to make up for it (I want some ideas for possible solution if they're out there before I talk to the pd). And more importantly, if my residency is extended at the tail end, how does that affect fellowship chances? Are fellowship programs will willing to accept fellows who may join a little late?

Thanks for your help guys

Assuming you have 3 weeks of vacation every year over 4 years you should be fine if you give up a little vacation. But seriously, this will vary dramatically by specialty and program so just go talk to the PD.

I think there are two elements:
1) Your specialty Board will have requirements dictating exactly how much time can be missed during a specific year of training and/or for the residency as a whole without having to make up the time.
2) Your PD has discretion to determine whether you have met the competency requirements of the PGY1 year and delay your advancement, even if your absence doesn't exceed your Board's maximum.

Yup looks like it's delayed unless I give up 6 weeks if vacation time. That sounds like a sure fire plan to go crazy. Maybe I'll work a year before starting fellowship. Hopefully that helps your application, not the other way around

I can't speak for Anesthesia, but this happens all the time in IM. In general, fellowships are totally fine with a 6 week late start. The less competitive the fellowship, the more flexible they are. So, before you decide to work a year before fellowship, you should ask.
