Just wanted to find out other schools policies on this. At our school, illness (with medical documentation) is the only acceptable reason for missing rotation time, which has to be made up anyway.

Yeah, so to people at other schools, does your school allow you to make your schedule for rotations as you want it to be? The hospital I'm hoping to get a job at told me that I will need a Monday and a Tuesday consecutive 9AM-5PM for Orientation. I have IPPEs in June and August. With my school's policy, I wouldn't be allowed to take 2 days off my IPPE to go for this orientation even though I could work it out with the preceptor to do more hours on the other days of the week.

Our IPPE program was set up differently than yours, so there were a lot more scheduling issues. Without going into too much needless detail, we basically had to coordinate with the preceptors to find times that would work out for both of us.

Our APPE policies might be more relevant to you. We're obligated to show up basically whenever our preceptor wants us to for the six week span that we're with them (nights, weekends, etc.). The only exceptions are official university holidays, medical reasons and a few sporadic others (Midyear, class meetings, etc.). That being said, you'll often be able to work things out with the preceptor if they're given enough advance notice and you won't be missing anything too important.

Yeah, that's the thing. Personally when it comes to rotations, depending on the location of the actual site, I'd want to either start my shift at 11AM or start it at 5AM, or hell even do overnight shifts. I do not want to be stuck in rush hour traffic at all.

I'm sure I'd be able to work out arrangements and whatnot with the preceptor, but should I let the school know of all the arrangements or keep it a secret between me and the preceptor? What do you guys do when preceptors say you can go home early? Do you go home or insist that you have to stay in case the school coordinator calls or drops by for a surprise visit?

dont tell the school, it's likely to just uncover another layer of bureaucracy. just work with the preceptor he/she should be fine. everywhere ive worked has been totally cool with flexible schedules for our rotating students

My former supervisor at CVS is a preceptor for LIU. Often times when a student was at his store (supposed to be 9AM-5PM), he'd just let them go home at 1PM.

If you get off at 5, you can have a book with you (or a laptop, or whatever), and occupy yourself for 2-2.5 hours until most of the rush hour subsides.

I have no problem with the commute going home (since I'm not gonna go home after I'm done, either to the gym or to smoke hookah). It's the commute in the morning that is jammed coming from any highway.

Then go earlier by 2 hours, and sleep in your car. That's what we did in the Army to avoid traffic.

Our IPPE summer is a lot more flexible than that. We have to work 40 hours in a week and no more than a 10 hour day but other than that, we can make whatever arrangement we want that is acceptable to the preceptor. We do have to give the school a schedule though because they make surprise visits from time to time and if you say you are going to be there, you had better be there.

We have IPPE once a week throughout the semester...the rule is basically you can do what you want at the discretion of the preceptor with respect to make-ups. The only time I had to go this route was when there was a transit strike and no one knew until that morning, preceptor said don't worry about it, we'll work it out next week.

I've had friends put in two IPPE sessions (3hrs each) back to back to get a certain week off or reduce the # of weeks they go.

Again, at the discretion of the preceptor...I don't see a need for a school to micromanage. Sparda -- sounds like someone at your school gets sexually gratified out of making things unnecessarily difficult. Can't you work something out and just not tell your school?

I agree with everyone here so far- it has nothing to do with the school- IPPE's and APPE's are at the discretion of the preceptor. Granted there are "rules" set forth from the school saying you have to put in 40 hours a week, but if your preceptor doesn't require it then who cares/who is going to know. Just be respectful and give your preceptor plenty of notice and its no big deal. I'm about to miss 3 days of my first rotation because i have to travel across the country to go to a wedding...so I informed my preceptor a few months in advance and the response I got was "fine with me..have fun".
