I was wondering if anyone had experience or knew of mission trips where residents were able to operate. Obviously one where they had the ability to do phaco would be the best but even if it was just extracaps that would still be great. I was thinking of trying to go on one after I got about ~40 phaco's under my belt. Any thoughts

I don't know of any separate mission trips that you would be able tag along on that would allow a resident to operate. That said, it's not too hard to organize one of your own. Some residents in my program did a few years back. They actually did it to get extracap experience. Phaco will be harder to setup on a trip as the equipment necessary is significant.

I did a volunteer trip recently in India doing phacos and had a relatively good experience. Please PM me if you'd like further details.

Just reading the March issue of EyeNet...there is a full-page ad looking for ophthalmologists to perform charity cataract surgeries in China for 4 weeks at a time. Transportation and housing costs covered. Even a modest salary is being offered (though I suspect that would be offered only to attendings, not residents). Don't know if residents would be considered..."short-term voluntary service is also welcome" probably refers to them. Check it out, guys...
