do prokaryotes reproduce by mitosis or binary fission?

binary fission, equal division of cytoplasm and material...

Mitosis happens in eukaryotic cells...ex. plants and animals

Mitosis does not involve reporduction.....it's more of a growth aspect. Bacteria will reproduce in asexual practices such as binary fission, budding etc. Some engage in "conjugation" that mimics sexual reporduction (come in contact as one bacteria forms a conjugation bridge and inserts genetic material into another), but there are no gonads present. Hope this helps.
