Mixed URM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"oooh. pretty." :]
...assuming you're a chick. if not. um. nevermind.

Just be honest with yourself.

You know if you should or shouldn't be checking that box.

How do Adcom's view being a mix of French and Mexican?

First thing that came to mind: 5 de Mayo

I guess love triumphs over war....

But seriously, you can check more than one ethnicity so you can do Hispanic white and non-hispanic white if that is how you identify.

I'm curious. Marking what box?

I'm half Caucasian and half hispanic/mexican and I marked both. It's not like i'm lying?

I think I misconstrued this topic to be about disadvantaged status. Sorry, hadn't had my coffee yet 😕

I seriously doubt people will understand the historical reference, colleague, but I, for one, dig it.

Even if it's online like 12.5% Mexican - should I still check it?
I don't consider myself to be disadvantaged. I also don't want Adcom staff to get mad at me for checking Mexican if it's that low.
You get to decide what to check.
We get to decide if it's disingenuous/gaming.

Haha! Reminded me of this for some reason (Arrested Development):

You can check both?
I thought it was either you are hispanic or you are not hispanic?

You can multiple boxes, mainly if you're biracial

Ie you can check white and black (or however it's listed)

I am half latino. Still haven't submitted AMCAS yet (can't stop tinkering!). I can't find a way to designate I am half. You either check hispanic or you don't. You can select multiple races but not ethnicities.

Race is race: white, black, native american, asian... there might be others I don't remember.

Then you can specify ethnicity. You can specify if you are Hispanic.
I think that there is a way to specify ethnic groups within the category of Hispanic and maybe other ethnicities (e.g. Greek)
I only see the completed forms so I don't know how it is presented to you but I think you can check two ethnicities such as French and Mexican.

I'm not sure you can describe yourself really as 12.5% of an ethnicity (Mexican) anymore than you could say you are 12.5% American. You either identify as an ethnicity or you don't.

1/64 is the requirement for many native american tribes....
PLUS actually being in a tribe SDN! Don't try checking off the box for funsies

Edit: actually I know that's how colleges did it, I'm not sure about med schools- sb247 if you know more please elaborate. It is my current understanding that you actually have to be part of the tribe, not just claim decent

If I meant Native American, I would not have said American. Native American is genetic (race) and not only ethnic. You can be of any race and be ethnically Mexican (Latino, Hispanic).

I don't believe he was implying you were Native American. He was defending you when someone said you couldn't identify as Mexican due to a low percentage

To follow up, you don't have to designate anything. But really, being 50% French and 50% Mexican isn't going to give you any admissions advantage. This is all for demographics.

I think I checked either all or almost all of what I was and could prove. Then used the "other" box to get into finer details. If they want to put me as white, fine. If they want to count me as URM, fine. I am sickeningly proud of my ethnic backgrounds.

None of my family looks like their "race," it's odd. The whitest looking people in the family are the mixed race ones while the darkest people are German. Go figure.
