It is because there are a lot of evidence based material with great up to date explanations and citations in each section. In my opinion, the hardest MKSAP questions are definately harder than the hardest shelf board questions, but then again, you always practice harder than the real thing, right? If your school provides the book for you, definately use it. If you end up buying it, there's also a CD (for windows only though) that has the same questions, but with a tutor mode for easy study.

thnx........unfortunately i already paid for mksap 2. can anyone who used it--being the mksap 2 and took the im shelf verify it was useful/relevant/similar/high yield?

I used MKSAP 2 to study for the IM shelf (Feb 2006) and found it to be an excellent preparation for the exam. Unlike the majority of other resources that I utilized or skimmed through, it had a question format very much like the real thing. Although I felt the difficulty of questions was overall a notch above the shelf, I was surprised by the number of questions on the exam that I only got right because I had encountered them before on MKSAP. I don't know how much MKSAP 2 differs from 3...but likely either would be a good option to use to prepare for the exam.
