so i would love to do peds, the concern is that i may max out at a salary way below what i was hoping for...what are the more lucrative subspecialities that deals with kids...like peds cardio or what about surgical sub spec.

this may sound shallow, but its an important factor for me. thanks

Please see FAQ for a brilliant post on this much-discussed issue. Specifically, #8 of the last post by Crazypeds.

🙂

hmmm, Itchy?

nah

I was thinking it might be Itchy, but he did have a specific question about specific subspecialties...so we can give a pass 🙂

Okay, I'm curious, what is the salary (in 2008 dollars) that you are "hoping for" and how much lower would you be willing to go?

Surgical sub spec are surgical fields, not pediatric, so questions about them should be addressed in the surgical forums.

With regard to pediatric subspecialties, it depends on whether it is academic or private, how much night-call you are willing to do, where you are willing to work, etc. Furthermore, no one has any idea what the salaries will be like in 8-10 years when a current 2nd or 3rd yr med student will be starting practice or what the impact of health care reform, the purchasing of specialty practices by large for-profit groups, etc will have on salaries. We can't guess if you will be eligible for loan-repayment programs or other special financial programs which are or might become available.

In other words, we don't have any idea what the most lucrative pediatric subspecialties will be for you since we don't know enough about your plans or the future of medicine.

Well, actually, the answer to your question is probably neonatology, pediatric cardiology and pediatric EM 🙂. Maybe pedi GI and PICU but that's more variable.

very good point oldbearprofessor.

lets say i'd be happy making something comparable to a non-interventional cardiologist or better.

in order to do the specialties that you mentioned: i.e. pediatric cardio, gi, neonatology. etc....do you have to go through peds? also, surgery subspecialites are done through gen surgery first? how competitive are this (relatively speaking)...also, how competitive are some of the better peds programs?

thank you, i know my questions are somewhat vague

Your answer to the question is similar to the answer I get any time I ask a parent of an asthmatic how often they use their albuterol..."whenever he wheezes" or even less helpful "whenever he needs it."

You might be very unhappy if you're looking for that salary in Peds. Yes, all of the specialties mentioned are through Peds. Peds Surgery is done through Gen. Surg first. Don't know about the competition.

Dr. Boston -

If you noticed, i posted the specialty match statistics yesterday in a separate thread; check it out for competitiveness. Noted also that Peds Surgery although through general surgery, is extraordinarily competitive.

NICU competitiveness isnt on the report because this is the first year it is through the NRMP (OldBear might have thoughts about it's competitiveness).

For questions about how competitive general peds is, and average salaries of subspecialties, i posted a link in the FAQ with some of the answers...check it out!

And if that doesn't help, Itchy McScratchypants may have answers for you
