Hi, if you guys have the chance to re-start med school again, and have half a year or so of free time, how would you spend the time to better prepare yourself for the course?

Do you think it would help to read through textbooks of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry? Up until now, I still think that those are the 3 main subjects that give one a solid foundation in medicine.

Any idea? 😀

READ?!?!
Dude, I would do anything but read. i would go out and do all the things I know I wouldnt have time for later on. Take it from me, once you are in med school, time off is little or nonexistent. My class is cool and make some great parties after every exam, (usually on the day after) but still I wish i had the time to ponder about a weekend social life.
Medical school will take up most of your time, especially on weekends, so take my advice and have fun and see whats out there. You wont have time for it later on.

Personally I'm applying to med school the month AFTER I graduate (so I'll have 1 year off basically) and I intend on doing anything BUT study. I'm thinking a trip around Europe for a few weeks after graduation with my fiancee (she'll be my wife by then) and our daughter might be in order.

personally I would've done a couple triathlons and gotten in shape. (off on a tangent but I wished had organized my year off better so I could've done an Ironman) So I get myself physically prepared for a beating when I get to medicine.

If I had a year off before I started I would do most of the things others are mentioning....travel, get into shape, hang out with friends. If there is one class or type of reading I wish I would have done it would be to learn Spanish.(especially medical spanish) I've been picking it up during 3rd year but it would be helpful to be semi-fluent. If you already are then just enjoy yourself or learn another language!! 🙂

It is hard to learn all the stuff you have to learn without the pressure. People tend to drag it over a long period of time because there is lots of time and it isn't easy to retain all of the info. When you are in school and get the work piled on you then you sit down and get to business, you are more focused, and are way more efficient. The most efficient thing you can do at this point to enhance your learning and yourself is to do the things you enjoy most or that you want to do.

I'm sure this is helpful to the OP who posted it 9 years ago.
