Hi - I was wondering if anyone has heard of opthy residents doing any moonlighting? I know that ortho, er, rads all have chances to boost their earnings during residency this way and was wondering if the same held true for opthy. thanks!

Some of the residents in my program moonlight at Doc n the Boxes, or seeing community physicians' post-ops on saturdays or taking their call.

I think the optoms have a monopoly on lenscrafters and walmart eye centers..

what is a "doc n the box?"

walk in clinics, urgent care clinics...
mainly treat URIs, laryngitis, UTIs, HAs, strains/sprains, back aches, minor injuries, allergies, rashes, OM, GI illnesses, etc....Any major illness (MI, CVA) or patients you are uncomfortable with or prefer not to see for whatever reason (OB, PEDS) just refer to an ER.

i just signed my contract -had "no moonlighting during residency" mentioned, so is it just my program? -i guess so.

Do you actually have time during your PGY2 year? Don't most PGY2 read/study for OKAP during their spare time?

Its done on sat/sun when not on call. I personally have not worked at a doc n the box for moonlighting. Did moonlight a few times at the VA on sat mornings though. $50/hr.

I did a lot of ED work during my ophth residency. Before ophth, I spent several years in general surgery so I felt very comfortable with trauma. Kids always scared the hell out of me. Whenever I worked in the ED, I always took a lot of Emergency Medicine and Family Practice type books with me. This usually made the job a lot easier. These were rather low volume EDs. Range was 6000 pt visits per year to 14000 pt visits per yr. I made anywhere from $45/hr in walk in clinics to $65/hr in EDs. This was about 10 years ago. If you can get the time to do it, I would definitely moonlight. The $$$ is great but the experience is even better.
