I don't like either of them. Hannity is simply an idiot who couldn't even stand having a supposed liberal offering a so-called opposing viewpoint on his show. Whenever he's at a loss, he just uses oversimplified retorts like "oh, if it's so bad then why does everyone come here", or "oh, the Brits wouldn't pay (a million dollars for an extra month of life) for medicines for breast cancers.

Moore is pretty smart, but he's a propagandist who resorts to stunts and significantly distorts facts by way of film editing.

Why can't we have intelligent people from both sides of the ideological spectrum debate things in an intelligent manner? A pity what the party of Buckley and Goldwater have become; and same goes for today's 'progressive' movement on MSNBC.

Edit: here's what I would call a real debate. Of course, if that were held today, no TV network would care to broadcast it because of its 'boring nature'. And the "conservatives" of today would guffaw at Buckley's accent and call him unAmerican. Imagine of the Iraq war was debated in these terms, instead of "oh you're a cut and runner" or "oh you want to abandon our soldiers", etc.

What Moore doesn't make clear is exactly what he'd replace capitalism with.

In the history of the world no other economic system has raised so many people out of poverty as Capitalism. BTW I'm speaking of true capitalism, not this government-interfering nanny capitalism that we've had for the last 20 years.

Watching that debate was like watching two pansies go at it in junior high. They are both afraid of hitting hard and getting blood on their clothes. Listen, are you gonna fight or aren't you? Say what you mean and make the other guy say what they mean as well. Don't dance around the issues.

Other than veiled hostility, rather than outright hostility, I really didn't see much difference in the tactics used.

Moore advocates for better regulations within Capitalism. He places the blame of the recent economic downturn on major banks that operate in an intentionally de-regulated market.

Your reaction to that discussion between Buckley and Chomsky goes to the heart of (what I see as) the problem of politics in the 'modern age'. These days, 'debate' means an exchange of preformed, 1 minute talking points about the superficial aspects of the issue at hand. Imagine if Buckley even entertained the idea of some US international action being deemed 'terrorism' for one second on Fox News today. Why he'd be the biggest unpatriotic, assaulting the commander in chief, pansy, traitor, and lets not forget, weak-kneed liberal.

What passes for 'conservative' or 'progressive' today is a black and white approach to things. No gray area. A la the 'Bush Swagger' or those Fox/MSNBC screeds. The fact is there's lots of gray in the world (and we in medicine should know that better than anyone) and what you see as "dancing around the issues" is reality. Not everybody is either Hitler or Mother Teresa.

FWIW, as a Texas Democrat, I love listening to Buckley on Firing Line. He was always well spoken, made strong arguments and was intelligently witty.

Contrast this with, say, that blonde bimbo who spews forth hate about anyone/anything she thinks will help her sell her next book. You know, what's her name...

I'd love to see more Buckley-esque debates.

Take care,
Jeff
