On my school's residency application timeline, it said something about contacting individual programs during like june-aug to let them know i'm interested and request application info from them.

Is this meant more regarding the non-ERAS participating programs?
Is this a common thing to do? Helpful at all?

Eh, it's debatable. You can contact them through the program director's secretary and ask if they have brochures or info on the program, but I would only do that if you are trying to decide whether to apply there. "Showing interest" like this isn't going to give you any kind of benefit. When you apply you will generally get a bunch of information from them anyway if they invite you for an interview, so you aren't going to get anything that different.

Sounds like they haven't updated that timeline since the Internet and ERAS were discovered!

yeah those were my thoughts too! I never heard of anyone actually doing that whole process of contacting each program, which is why i was confused.
Although, the timeline did say "look up each program's info on FREIDA and contact them to show your interest". . .something like that.

Anyway, I'm not about to do all that. . .

Yes, many program sites have not been updated in YEARS!! I've gone to a programs site and it gives me the 2003 application procedures!!! And don't get me going on the Freida site, which can be just as confusion, salaries don't match, spots available don't match, deadlines are confusing..good luck!

Even if you did contact the programs, you will likely be given the response, "everything is on the website". Not worth it IMHO.

yeah that is exactly what happened to me!
