If you want it bad enough, do what it takes to get there. I'm not going to sugar coat it though-- you're not in very good shape.

To get in you will probably need to do 1-2 years of masters work and kill the DAT, getting a 20 or higher. This is achievable by anyone-- it's just a matter of if you want it bad enough.

hi guy,

thank you very much for your words. people said " keep knocking the door, it will open". however, fact is fact. I can not continue my MS, but i could try on my DAT. thanks again

So you've already done a masters? You need to significantly increase your GPA otherwise a great DAT score won't make a difference.

I think you should call dental schools that you want to apply, tell them your situation and ask them what you should do then do whatever they tell you.
Also, Avery07 is right. Focus on your master then DAT.

What do you mean you can't continue your MS?

thanks for all your reply. I just have BS in Bio. working keeping me off from school now. I could go for DAT frist. people said if my last 2 years is good, it help a lot. I hope

- for DAT. i have DAT destroyer, and kaplan, what you think i should get more for DAT- anywhere i can buy used one?

It is true that if your last two years were good, it can help you out tremendously but there is still no guarantee. Take me for example. I have a 3.3 GPA when you add up all my classes (including retakes); substituting my retaken grades gives me a 3.8 GPA. My last three semesters have been solid 4.0s as will be this semester as well. I have a 19AA on the DAT and still did not get a Dec 1st acceptance this cycle.

Can you provide your last 4 semesters in detail? That would help us to better give you an idea on where you stand. If they weren't close to having 4.0's than I am pretty sure you will need to look into a masters or at the very least a one year post-bach.

That said, you literally need to destroy your DAT. I'm not certain what happened the first two times. Did you not care and not study much or was it just too difficult? If I were you, I would quit your job if possible, move in with the parents, and study your butt off for a solid 3-4 months. That's really what it's going to take and this just answers the DAT problem. You still have the GPA to worry about.

As far as DAT materials go, get your hands on DAT Destroyer, Kaplan Blue Book, MATH Destroyer, Crack PAT, Chad's videos, and Cliffs AP Biology.

But seriously, I don't wanna discourage you, I just can't advice you to apply for 2011, your chances of interviews are pretty slim, yet alone an acceptance.... You need to do some SERIOUS GPA dmg control.

I think if you want dentistry, and you want it bad, you will need to spend the next few years doing post-bacc. Those 2 GPAs need to be brought up. If you don't wanna listen to me, thats fine, call up some dental school admission advisers and ask them for their suggestions.

Don't retake the DAT now, even if you do VERY well, your chances are still slim.

I don't wanna make you work your butt off and waste your effort, time, and money on applying to dental schools.

To be honest, you cannot even get an interview invitation with your scores and gpa, especially when you are an Asian because my Asian classmates in my dental school are all from famous colleges/universities with around 3.5 of gpa and around 21-22 DAT.

I personally think that it'd be a waste of your time and effort because I'm like 98% sure that you can't get in with your stats right now.

I think it would be much better to go for another path such as going to a bio grad school or something. You only got about 1-2% of getting an INTERVIEW invitation (NOT ACCEPTACE).

I'm sorry that I have to be an a**hole by telling you like this, but it's true. If you just think I am just an a**hole and wanna try applying, go ahead and try. Just don't complaint saying like ''oh I've wasted my time and money and effort. S*it!"

If your last few years were good you should try to continue this trend and do a postbacc to raise your GPA. Then think about doing a 1 year masters at a school with close affiliations with a dental school. One thing that is a sensitive subject - but might be the reason for poor performance on the DAT/coursework - is it appears that your english skills are not where they should be for a college graduate. Do you feel that it is difficult to read and understand what is being asked of you?

Also, if treating patients is your goal and can see your self outside of dentistry, why not look into becoming doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO). You would be a medical doctor, able to work/ get paid the same as an MD. The advantage to this type of school is that they allow grade replacement and are a little more lax on GPA to begin with. For example I have a friend who had a 3.2 & 26 MCAT who was accepted this application cycle. You could simply retake & replace bad grades and apply next year. Something to think about...
