When I look at schools website and their statistics of previous class pools, and the date on how many girls vs boys in the pharmd programs it is mostly more girls than boys.?!!?

I once asked a Pharm D administrator at a Pharm school before as why this is so? She told me that it is not that they favor girls or if girls are more qualified than guys, it is because there are more girls who apply than boys.

I thought this was quite contradicting to my experience as working in retail.. I find that there are more male pharmacists in my pharmacy and other pharmacies that I've worked in. Why is that so ??

Is it because female pharmacists, tend to work in the hospitals ? ?
For those people who work in the hospitals, do you see more female pharmacists compared to male pharmacists? Is that the trend for graduating pharmacists ?? more guys go to retail and more girls go to hospitals ??

Most of you pre-pharmacy SDNers ... are you male or female ???
what happened to all the guys ?? .....

🙂

p/s : although I must say, the female pharmacists that I do see in retail are in general younger than the male pharmacists.... maybe this has something to do with why there are so many male pharmacists .... all the female pharmacists retire young ...

Pharmacy is a great job for mothers, because it gives them time to spend with children which isn't as easy as other professions such as doctors being on call. The hospital I work there are more females, especially techs are almost all female (only 1 male). Hospital is a bit more social, so I can see how females like hospitals more than retail. I think retail you can make more money, which is why those that are young (easier to get into retail? paying off loans) and sometimes males would prefer a place that allows them to maybe work OT and have higher salary.

more male pharmacist? ehh where do you live lol everywhere i go there is always more women pharmacist then male. When I was looking for pharm tech job, there is about 10 women per 3 male.

Because rx is a girly job. MD/PhD is dominated by males.

Most of the older pharmacists are men, but nowadays it has shifted. Almost all of the pharmacists I come in contact with are female.

there aren't ANY "girls" or "boys" in pharmacy schools. are you 8 years old or something?

To OP a lot of women go into pharmacy because a lot of them want flexibility (to be with kids and still make money)

Most of the older pharmacists in my area are male, and the younger ones are female (very young!). There has definitely been a shift toward more females in the profession for the reasons other posters have stated (flexibility for females with families with good pay) but as with all "professional" job, pharmacy was historically male-dominated.

And to agree with what absolute ethanol said, we aren't boy and girls.

I'll give you two situations and I'll let you know I'm male.

1. I work at a Pharmacy where I am surrounded by females all the time. The only time I see another male is if he comes to pick up an RX or is following his wife around. The other day was my first time working with a male Pharmacist but that was only once because he works there sporadically.

2. I just finished a NCAP Tech Review seminar. I was one of 4 males in a 60-70 class size. The interesting thing was the two Pharmacists teaching were both males in their 50s.

It looks like there are a lot more females than males looking at some of the pictures the colleges have with their pharmacy programs.

You're saying far more women are entering Pharmacy than men?

So my class will be disproportionately female to male? Meaning getting in as a male may be less competitive...and...well, life just doesn't seem so bad.

If you're a guy, I don't see why you're complaining about the skewed ratios.

After going to a vocational/technical high school that had a 75% male population, I am glad that pharmacy has a 75% female population.

😍Yea less competition . J/K

But seriously, its okay if it is a little skewed up to like maybe 80%, but 2-3 males in a 70 something class is a little creepy for me as a male.

It would also be a problem if your a homosexual male like hyuqng 😉

At a small pharm school in Canada (Dalhousie), one year they had 5 guys out of a class of 90 students!

Pharmacy is mainly women now because it's a great part time job. From my talking with pharmacy executives, I learned that they will pretty much bend over backwards to get a male pharmacist because typically, women eventually go part time. So being a male in a now female dominated field has several 😀 upsides.

Being in a profession where its dominated by women (up to 80%) is quite entertaining at first, but it gets old real fast....I wish the profession was closer to 50/50 ratio. Oh wells.

I think every guy should be happy that this is the case coz they r each sure to have at least some kind of attention while at pharmacy school

So as a guy, do I have a little edge in terms of admission? Or do I have it worse since I'm competing for a seat where the male gender is less than 50%.

I don't know if it would be an edge exactly - you would still need to have the stats to be admitted, whether you are male or female. One thing nobody has mentioned yet that may make a difference - unfortunately there are actually more women who successfully pursue a college degree, and this is particularly true of many minority populations. So, this can cut down the pool of men who would have the necessary college background to even apply to pharmacy school.

I don't think there is a edge for males during the selection process, although there is a slight edge in terms of employment opportunities for males after pharmacy school.

I don't know about pharmacy school but I have read that some schools accept males with less competitive stats at the undergraduate level to promote diversity. I have no idea if professional schools are looking to promote diversity in their classes at all or they are just looking for the most qualified applicants. If I had to guess, I would think that males have a slight edge because a lot of admission is based on subjective measures and they don't really want the profession to be as skewed as nursing.

It was like that in Veterinary medicine, for the longest time. It's much more equalized, now.

And there's some pharm schools that are 50/50. It really depends on where you go.

an interesting note on this trend....i took a gender psychology course and it implied that because pharmacy is dominantly becoming more retail and less of an entrepreneurial venture, more men are opting out because of this idea (less appealing, i guess, if they can't make top dollar in their profession), leaving the less salaried jobs (like retail) to women pharmacists (men still dominant in the research and development area of pharmacy, however).

Apparently it seems that way even in the field of psychology, where more women are going into grad school in this field and men are not... to men, perhaps this deflating salary amount makes it less appealing for them in the field... as far as pharmacy, it is true that if one owns their own independent pharmacy (and is successful), they can make a very good money vs. having a retail position... well that's what I've read and I just wanted everyone to know about it.

If Physician Assistant are male dominated then that doesn't explain why one in the same position (working under hospital) getting paid less money would go PA instead of pharmacy? Also optometry has a lot more female like pharmacy and almost all are private (although the owners can often be the ones selling glasses and not the optometrist).

Well, Physician Assistant is still male dominated because of the same reason that Medicine is still male dominated.

P.S.

you're OBVIOUSLY a raging homosexual!

(not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Why bother replying to an insensitive, offensive post with another insensitive, offensive post?

Calling someone gay as an insult is not okay. It is buying into the same brand of stereotyping that is responsible for many of society's large-scale problems such as poverty and racial discrimination.

Yeah.. I noticed it also. My class ratio is 7 female to 3 male. Yes.. earlier, there were much more males in pharmacy schools . Therefore, you see older males in pharmacy than younger male pharmacists. I would like to see a balance though..

those guys must feel lucky :laugh: j/k

my class has more guys than girls, about 75% are males...

Eh, people who throw the word gay around like it's the worst thing in the world are ignoramuses. We can safely ignore anything they say - it's not like civilization will miss out on any great achievement from them if we do.

Thanks for calling the poster on it. We need more people to stand up against what was either insensitivity or outright bigotry.

Lmao.
Are you a homosexual, too?

I am going to be a lonely male in Pharmacy School. Haha.

i hope to meet many MANY females ^____^, but the main question is, how many of the women have BFs ><''''' hahaa....this is what happens when you are single and going to pharmacy school hahahah

You don't need women, anyway! Lmao.

Very few guys compared to girls in the pharm school is good news for me. That means that some of my shyness and inexperience in the dating realm will be minimized and my amazing personality will be more noticed. 😍

Yeah, I'm still kind of unfamiliar to the concept of people dating people who don't go to their school.

😕 what do you mean.....people don't have to meet on the same campus lol...

Pharmacy schools used to have a majority of males but nowadays, it's a majority of females. For our incoming class, the diversity scholarship was open to all males because of the disparity in the male:female ratio. ...I wish I could get a scholarship for being female!

Edit: Forgot to mention, some schools do have a ratio closer to 50:50 though. Just like another poster said, it depends on the school.
