What exactly did you achieve?

Getting fifteenth place in my schools talent show comprising of 15 acts.

Being able to comfort my brother, show him support, help guide him where i can, inspire him to go back to school, learn about addiction

OP can argue that s/he achieved a better understanding of his addiction, which also increased the relationship between them.

I guess you could do that. But in my opinion it seems like a stretch. Essentially you're capitalizing on your brother's misfortunes. I guess it's the same as applicants talking about a dying relative or whatnot, so go for it!

Yes. It's akin to having an ailing relative and you write about how you visited them or watched them die and the like. It really didn't happen to you, so it doesn't hold as much weight. Had your brother been applying to med school and wrote about his story, it would have much more credibility in my opinion. But you talking about "understanding his addiction", taking credit for getting him help, and being the sole source of his inspiration looks like capitalizing to me. Does that make sense?

I'm not saying you aren't really close to your brother, but like I said, I see this as being the same thing some applicants do when talking about a sick relative and how it gave them inspiration to go to med school.

If that's your biggest achievement outside of the classroom then go for it.

While I've done sound research, play an instrument, am involved in athletics at a high level, i feel that all of these pale in comparison to being able to understand and relate to a loved one going through probably (and hopefully) the most trying time in his entire life. showing them comfort, trying to inspire them to live life to the fullest instead of pissing it away on his effing nose, and actually seeing him be successful in controlling his addiction and attending college is in my opinion a much bigger achievement then any of the above listed.

A lot of applicants would stab you if you shunned them talking about sick relatives. It seems like a lot of classmates have one of those that they always like to bring up.

I think it would be a bigger deal if YOU overcame the addiction or illness or what have you. However, understanding your family members' problems and forgiving their mistakes hardly qualifies as a crowning achievement. It's a part of life for a large number of people, including myself. Not something I would brag about, just something done for love of your family member.

If you're a varsity athlete, talk about that instead or something.

Can I get some feedback from someone more familiar with ADCOMS/possibly used something similar in their most sig non academic achievement

Don't you have some significant achievement of your own? Not watching and learning about your brother's achievement?

C'mon guys really? No shiza it would be a bigger deal if the OP was the one undergoing the addiction.

OP: Don't forget that this prompt is supposed to be PERSONAL, its from your view of point. What do you feel is your most significant achievement outside of the classroom? List out three and write on whichever one you feel you can write best about. Don't forget to always spin it to relate to medicine though!

I guess you are righ tTxResident, for the sake of time I'll just talk about how I play classical piano. Easier to write haha.

Edit: and I guess no reason to air dirty laundry unless you have to (read: moral or ethical dilemma)
