For those of you who have started taking electives, which ones do you think are the best additions to your medical educations? I want to do pedi, so I'm thinking an infectious disease elective would be key. I've heard mixed things about radiology. Which ones are most helpful?

Probably depends significantly on what you want to go into. For surgery, radiology, SICU, EM are good. I did a cardiology elective that was very useful. I also did a medicine subinternship, which was a good experience.

Yeah, I think everyone should do their respective field's ICU elective. Good experience and pretty intense. Also pedi EM should be interesting also...minus all the vomit. You only get to do one subi right?

I love Emergency- it is a requirement for our school in third year but I think it would be a great elective for just about any future career. All roads lead to the ER (even optho, ortho, derm, anesthesia, path).

Or at least anything that has the remote possibility of involving drug-seeking does. 😉

We have a lot of the above mentioned things as actual requirements. But, I agree about the ICU (probably one of my rotations in school), as well as medicine Sub-i. Lots of people liked ID consults. For peds, heme/onc or outpatient might be good. ER is also kind of cush (here, at least - good experience but you don't have to work very many hours in total for the 4 week block because you take shifts).

Lots of people opt for away rotations, but I can't comment on that. Also, a couple electives people like (because they are low responsibility, generally interesting, and a last-chance to see this type of thing) were psych consults and pathology/autopsy.

If you're school doesn't require radiology and derm, I'd recommend those too.
