At U of T, we have this course called Oral Health and Disease. It covers a multitude of subjects including oral physiology and biochemistry and such. I thought that this at the moment is the Biochemistry is pretty useless because it is just a repeat dumbed down version of what I had learned in undergrad. Another one that my class "enjoys" is Community Dentistry. The deceptive title hides the purpose of the course. The course teaches us research methods and epidemiology. It is only worth a quarter of a credit but unless you are going to become a researcher, it is pretty useless. The only positive side of the course is that it allows us to interpret findings we read in medical/dental journals and be able to use the concepts to apply to other areas in life and ways we practice. But even that statement I made is a stretch.

I enjoy biochem; But i cannot stand histology. I can't decide which one is more worthless though. Oral Histology is pretty interesting to see how teeth develop.

I voted for Biochem, but I really enjoy biochem. I just think that in the grand scheme of things it is probably more useless in our profession than the others mentioned (although Histo is probably equally useless).

The two most pervasive diseases we treat are both bacterial; and you think it's "worthless crap"?
If they focused more on oral microbiology I would understand, but this systemic BS that we have to know is absolutely useless

Physiology.....blah....

OK ppl are gonna call me out on this one, but I think they are all useful. First of all what is your mentality? Do you wanna be a drill-and-fill dentist or do you want to be and oral physician? Well if it is the latter, you gotta know your science.

Biochemistry: The basis of EVERYTHING. Like teaching algebra without learning arithmetic.

Microbiology: We gotta learn about microbial pathogens...and what about our friend S. mutans? The mouth is a haven for microflora.

Physiology: Absolutely necessary to learn the functioning of body sytems. How are you gonna understand why your mandibular block worked if you didn't leanr electrophysiology for example?

Histology: At first maybe a bit useless, but important to learn about supporting tissues of teeth, mucosal properties, collagen, etc.

I think that we know they're useful, it's just that no one wanted to admit it 😱

FWIW I'd like to add anatomy to this list. What a major pain in the arse...

definitely microbiology...useless crap 👎 👎 👎

You guys are ridiculous:
>>Obsess about getting accepted to dental school and then complain about the coursework required to earn the doctorate. Don't comment on the utility of specific didactics until you actually treat patients and appreciate the significant background that is essential for the job. 😴

i have to agree with my classmate. Community Dentistry hands down.

I can't vote. I like all the classes so far. I just hate their exams... kekeke

"Preventive and Community Dentistry" -- gimme a break. 😴

Is Dr. Waters still doing the oral histo?
