Adcoms and others familiar with a behind the scenes look at the applications received by medical schools, I have a question for you. What percentage of apps would you estimate are actual contenders for the school? For example, what percent of apps have at least some volunteering, shadowing, 10 percentile GPA and 10 percentile MCAT? Just curious as to how many people "shoot their shot" with the chances of getting in with a 3.0, 500 mcat, and 15 volunteering hours. These are not my stats, but looking at the number of applicants some of these schools receive (north of 14,000), I find it hard to imagine a large percentage have a fair chance. Thanks!

Last year the MSAR released applicant stat distributions in addition to accepted/matriculant stat distributions. I think they took it off since but at most schools it seemed that 50% of applicants did not have the stats to really be competitive for each school iirc. At top schools this number is even higher

By stats, I’m assuming you mean strictly based off of MCAT scores and GPA? This is not considering factors like low or no ECs.

Correct. MSAR reports what % of matriculants had what kind of EC, but the stat distributions are only for mcat gpa

I agree 100%.

The numbers are even worse for Faculty job candidates!
