Does anyone else struggle with motivation at times?

I often feel guilty about my lack of motivation. I have friends who constantly use the line “a patient will be happy you know this one day.” I sorta gag to myself and roll my eyes, but I do feel a bit guilty and wish I felt the same as they do. Hopefully I’m not alone here. If I am, well shoot, maybe I’m in the wrong profession (although I’ve never felt that way).

Wow that line is super cringey. Maybe they need that as their own motivator though?

I have a very hard time with motivation. Sometimes I have to reward myself for very very very small tasks, and I’ve found that helps get the ball rolling.

It is super cheesy, but if it works for them that’s all that matters. I like your idea. Could work for me if I gave it a shot.

You are not alone.

I listen to rockin' tunes to pump me up. Everyone says pathoma or sketchy or whatever got them through the boards, for example. My Spotify premium ($10/month) is what got me through boards.

Ah yes, because I can’t tell you how many times a patient was grateful for me knowing which step in the TCA cycle requires niacin

To be honest OP, speaking for myself, you’ll almost never be fully motivated. It’s more about self control. Sometimes you’ll just have to force yourself out of whatever else you’d rather be doing to sit down and grind through the material. Eventually it just becomes habit like anything else, but at first it’s a real drag, and there are days where you’ll be so unmotivated that you just sit there staring at your lectures blankly.

As for your classmates, while the line about “your patients being grateful” is super cringey, I can promise you that putting in the effort to soak up all of the material you can at this point will pay off dividends for yourself when you are doing practice questions and approaching board time (I’m assuming you’re a 1st year, sorry if that’s wrong). I would estimate that at least 5-10% of the questions I have gotten correct in class, NBME assessments, UWorld, practice assessments for school, etc. were not because I knew the answer, but because I knew what it wasn’t and was able to narrow down the answer choices to 2, and sometimes even only 1, because I could fill that knowledge gap.

I agree with what you’re saying, I just wish I had the drive or self control to force myself to work harder. I think it could be a product of the content, though.

For instance, I disliked anatomy, a lot. I’m also not to crazy about more macro level stuff like the heart, lungs, or other macro systems. But, I can learn all day about immunology or microbiology.
