If you really have all C's, then yes specializing is pretty much a lost cause --- at least for the really competetive specialties. But if you are in the middle of your class or better, there is still time to make up for the last two semesters. You have 9 semesters left to bust your butt and get your grades up.

You can't give up already. Now get off the computer and go study. 😀

Hello dental colleagues! I'm a first year student and, between the rigors of classes and the competitiveness between students, I'm just not motivated to make above a C in the science classes because I need more real-world stimulation than locking myself in a library for 5 hours a night (which is what it takes, I suppose). I used to be an A/B student as far as the sciences are concerned, but now I'm just...indifferent. I want to do better not so I can compare to others, but more for myself, because I know I can do better than this. I was wondering how do you all keep yourselves sane and motivated to strive for the higher grades?

I guess specializing is out of the question for me now 😛

Its not how much you study is how you study. If you "study smart" then you should improve. What that means is that you should probably stick to one main source and know it inside and out. All your other sources if any should be as reference or for clarification. Me personally I try to find the smallest books and read those. The text books are too big for me so when I wen trhough the Basic Sciences I looked at books like the BRS or any other review book for that subject. Now I am not at the top of my class but I am doing ok. Hope this helps. Get motivated and show those competitive people that they are not the only "smart ones" in the class. As far as specializin...it might not be out of the question depending on the turn around that you can make. If you go from making all C's to Mostly A's and some B's then the programs will see that you have made an improvement and that might impress them and they might take you more seriously. It is never too late if you never give up.

What is causing you to get bad grades? You just gotta match whatever it takes to get an A. Ask the professor what you should know when you take the test. Never turn your homework, projects in late. Take all the easy points. Or go study more than you need to.

I personably find those setting a goal for meself and achieving it always helps for mutliation.

For exemplary, when I was taking Physics, I vowed to make myself need all of BRS Physiology. I woke up morning AM and would spend three hours needing a chapter on biochemistry. After classes were over, I would then switch to reading Harry Potter. It really worked - I did incredibly well on the final exam and learned a great deal about Harry Potter.

Honestly, it's like I don't even care to make an A; I know I can, but I'm just not motivated to do more than the satisfactory C. I'm doing fine in labs and the extraneous classes, but it's the didactic science courses that I just don't feel the desire to do well in. I'm changing around my study group to more studious people, so that will probably help. If not, I'll think of SDN when I'm procrastinating and maybe that'll motivate me!

I am also a first year and we have some people who feel just like you do about the basic science classes. There is a guy who eeks by stuff like histology and physiology but does perfect work in lab. He KNOWS he just wants to do general dentistry and doesn't want to have to study so much. I just hope that you guys learn enough to pass part I. Cheers
