How far in advance are you guys moving before orientation/residency starts? I am currently working and do not want to be viewed as a slacker if I take a lot of time off.

i'm moving 6 weeks before my first day, but that's because i want to get north as soon as possible - it's already getting hotter than hell down here in tampa. plus, i'd rather start to learn the new city, maybe take a camping trip, or something else enjoyable. i don't have anything in particular to do down here, so i arranged for my apartment lease to end in may. assuming it's an entirely new city, i think 10 days is about the bare minimum to get a little bit acquainted - anything beyond that is merely preference.

I showed up about a week to 10 days before I started, it was enough time I guess. Orientation was short and not very stressful so I had time to do other stuff then as well.

I'm thinking probably around Juneish but I'm just a slacker in moving. Many people are taking two month vacations so I don't think anyone would see you in a negative light.

I'm moving June 1st. Orientation starts June 17th. So that will give me over two weeks to get settled.

Working where? Aren't you an MSIV graduating? Who does anything after they graduate?

Yup, we get paid. I wonder when I'll get my first paycheck though. I'm going to have to live quite frugally until the paychecks start coming in.

I'm moving South on April 22nd -- as soon as I finish my last rotation. (I know, how unfortunate I'm still in the hospital.)
No one is going to think you are a slacker if you slack off a bit right now - you are only human and residency won't be easy!

Don't think it matters when you move as long as you're there in time for orientation. Usually mid-June.

Who is going to view you as a slacker? Who on earth has an opinion you're worried about at this point?

Moving is a pain, unpacking and getting things settled takes forever, you want to learn your neighborhood/city. Take off however much time you need.

I'm not even moving, and I've been telling my PI I'm leaving my "temporary" postdoc June 1st for months... My orientation starts the 24th, and I get paid. I would take even more time off, if insurance wasn't so blasted expensive to cobra...

June 12ish here. Orientation for us is the last week in June. I've got the whole month of May off, and I'm sure as hell not considering myself a slacker--having a month to find a place and pack while my wife works will be nice. I'm sure I'll get a little bored, but am looking to valet cars at the local country club or something.

I believe June 17th is for the hospital wide orientation. Once those couple days are over, you'll have some more free time before the path orientation (which is pretty laid back) starts.

Hospital orientation is early b/c a lot of the residencies here start before July 1st (they also get the last week of the year off for a beach trip); however, path service work doesn't start until July 1st.
