Who here moved to one of the states that has a VM school prior to applying, just to establish residency? I don't know if this is wise or not, as applying to more than one school will probably offer the most chances, and one can't count on getting into that state school you moved to for just that purpose- I am currently in OR, but am relocating to SC in less than two months (for other reasons) - as we all know SC doesn't have a school, but NC and OR do -

Tell me what you all did?

I think residency helps a lot, will change what your competing with. 1000 people for 10 spots, for 400 for 60 (depends on school). Also I have known people who have been rejected or wait listed out of state, then applied again with residency and been accepted.

If you *could* get into a state with a vet school, that's always going to be your best bet. However, being in one that does not isn't an automatic failure - it will just make things more difficult for you. 🙂

I am a current resident of SC. Even though we don't have a vet school, SC has contracts with UGA, Tuskeegee and Mississippi for a total of 24 seats. Not alot...but better than nothing!

We relocated to NC from NJ/NY due to hubbies work. We bought a house just over the border in SC and rented an apartment in NC to maintain my residency (we started out in an apartment in Charlotte.)

Might call NC and ask about residency. I was told they can be more than a bit of a pain, but with the valid job offer for hubby, I didn't have any issues. They specifically sited NOT wanting people to move there for school admissions and stated that you had to prove that wasn't your purpose in relocating (that was during an info session.)

Again, don't know how 'intense' they really are...but that ws what I was told during info sessions. I was accepted as an IS. I doubt I would have gained admissions otherwise (there or elsewhere.)

Sorry to resurrect a really old thread, but does anyone know of which schools frown on moving to that state to establish residency?

And would you have to be considered a resident for a year at the time of application or the time of matriculation?

Sorry if this has been asked a bajillion times before but I suck at doing searches for old threads that have pertinent info.

I'm originally from CT but went to undergrad in DC. After I graduated I decided to stay with my job in DC and moved to MD to establish residency. If I stayed with a CT residency, i would have no instate options. However by living in MD, VMRCVM was my instate school.

I new early in my senior year of college that this was what I was going to do so to plan for it I applied to vet schools (about 5) for the first time during my senior year. One of these schools was VMRCVM even though I knew I wasn't going to get accepted because at that time I was OOS. I did not get accepted into any schools that time around but I did get great feedback from schools including VMRCVM.

Fast forward to this past year when i applied to schools for the 2nd time. When I had my interview at Vtech they asked me why I was so interested in the school etc. I was able to back up what I was saying and prove that I was so interested by telling them that I applied last year as an OOS applicant and when I didn't get in I moved to establish residency to increase my chances.

I ended up getting accepted to Vtech along with 3 other schools. If you can move to a state with a school why not do it. If you get accepted your tuition is cheaper. If you don't, you still applied to other OOS schools which you would have done before anyways. The move (if feasible) can do nothing but help your chances.

Not sure if it's worth it....yes it would be cheaper but it doesn't actually mean you'll get in. I didn't get into my instate school but I got into an out of state school

If you'd be willing to move there even without vet school as a factor, then yes, I think it's totally legitimate. Just be aware that establishing residency usually requires at least a full year.
