Hi-
I'm starting at Temple in the fall and I need some advice on moving to Philly. I'm going to be travelling for the next few months and then I plan to move in July. Are there some websites that are really helpful for apartment hunting in the Philly area? Any advice on what areas to live in? I think I would prefer taking the subway rather than driving everyday, but I will have a car. Any advice would be great!

Thanks =)

it's a good one for commercially listed places. For privately listed places, check out Temple's "offcampus housing" list. I'm sure it is detailed. You may also want to check out Drexel's offcampus housing too. The schools are somewhat close to one another, so it may be of help.

You may also just try going over to Temple some afternoon. Go to the Med school, and strike up a conversation with their students. That is probobly the best way because they'll give you an answer with alot of perspective behind it.

Practically, any neighborhood works via public transportation. To avoid transfers, Center City, Graduate Hospital Area, Franklintown, North Philly, Chinatown, South Philly work great. As for where you want to live, that is another question. Safety, cost, services, noise, fun, transportation vary quite a bit. South Philly is affordable, straight shot on the Broad St subway, and has a lot of character. I love West Philly, but you'd have to make a transfer.

Web sites that haven't been mentioned:

Cool thing I found on Temple's web site...

Philadelphia Weekly (free weekly paper- awesome resource)

www.philadelphiaweekly.com

Phila City Paper (another free weekly- again good resources)

Good luck finding a home- remember you can always move after a year. It is easier to find a good apt when you know the terrain.

:luck:

Philly is huge, and there are many neighborhoods that really should be avoided. While you can use those websites to find a great place, it can be difficult to discern which areas are good, and which areas are less than desirable/dangerous. The city is far to big to start listing all the areas that are nice to live, but I would consider living in Center City (b/t Front and 30th -East/West, and South and Market -North/South.), or West Philly/University City. While I do go to Drexel, I lived in Center City for 3 years. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about specific sites.
