Technology Mozilla Thunderbird for Macs

I've been having problems with "mail" on my mac so I tried downloading Thunderbird. The version on the Mozilla website is 2.0.0.9. For some strange reason it won't download correctly and when it does completely download and I double-click the .dmg file nothing happens. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are you using Firefox or Safari?

I tried it with both browsers, no avail with either...

How exactly does Thunderbird work? I've been wondering and haven't been able to really find a lot of information about it.
