I'm in a combined MS/DDS program. I know some specialty programs, such as ortho, require you to obtaing an MS as part of their curriculum.

What would they do for someone as me, who already has an MS at the time of applying? Could the MS actually hurt my candidacy for certain post-doc programs?

It wouldn't hurt you at all. In fact, I don't think there is a single specialty where every program across the board awards a masters. For example, while it is true that MANY Ortho programs grant the MS, not all of them do. The granting of the MS is mostly based upon research project/publication prior to graduation.

For you, a candidate who already has an MS, they would do nothing differently if you apply to a program that grants an MS upon completion.

I completed an MS prior to beginning dental school and I'm currently pursuing my ortho training...having an MS listed on my CV didn't hurt my applications...I'm not sure how much it helped either. They tend to like research experience...an MS will certainly set you apart in that respect.

was your research related to ortho?

from your experience, did it seem to matter if your research was related to your desired specialty or not?

i really don't know what i might want to specialize in, thus i'm kind of worried that i might have picked the "wrong" research topic...
