MS3 applying to psychiatry

Half of successful psychiatry applicants are below the average step 1 score. Clearly the better your scores, the better, but this will not close too many doors. I wouldn't derail my education to do research, unless you really want a research track position. Take a year off is often a sign of remediating failures if not well explained. If you do take a year off, you had better publish something.
 
Would getting around a 540-550 on COMLEX Level 1 be enough to match into a decent Psychiatry residency for 2021...? My NBOMEs aren't too good for me to attempt Step 1.
 
I say failing USMLEs is worse than not taking them, but anything pass or better only helps. These tests are the only standardized rulers that cut across all medical schools equally. When picking who to interview out of a sea of DOs, programs like to have these numbers.
