"Michigan requires the rotating internship year, and we don't participate in rule 42 anymore."

...for those who haven't submitted, it might save you a few $.

Interesting. Last year they noted that they had a traditional rotating internship in Grand Rapids, don't recall if it was at the same institution or not.

Edit: Brain fart. Was thinking of Kalamazoo. Sorry.

So is it a year for the traditional rotating + 4 yrs of residency with the new rules or is it only +3 years? (and thanks for the heads up a year in advance for me)

It all depends...there's been big changes in the DO residency world where instead of being an intern year +3 for EM, now all the EM residencies are 1-4's with the intern year being an ER focus with 4 months of EM then all the other rotation specialties like IM, etc.

I don't know if that's what they're talking about, but at my hospital (a DO EM residency), that's how it is now....we only have 2 slots for rotating internship, and we save those for people going into anesthesia or PMNR, or somethin like that

Grand Rapids is ACGME 3 year program. Like all MI residencies, it requires the DO graduate to complete the rotating internship prior to applying.

Other states in the 5 States vary on the rule - when I applied to one program in PA, it wasn't a requirement to do the rotating internship, but once graduated, if a did not 42, I would be able to be licensed in PA.

But MI is pretty strict on the TRI.

I found that out the hard way too.

Your title is a bit sensational, no? It's not that they won't take DOs, it's that you need to fufill that BS TRI requirement.

Though I note while looking at the GREMC website that they haven't taken a DO in the past three reseidency classes.

Actually, this is incorrect. Grand Rapids has 4 DO's total and in each year of the residency. The program has been very accepting of DO's. In fact there was a DO as chief resident 2 years ago. The program has been able to grant more interviews this year as the Michigan Osteopathic rules have changed. I would encourage people to apply.

Wow! I haven't been on SDN in a while and I'm surprised by all the misinformation in my absence, I assume regarding my former residency program GRMERC/MSU EM Residency.

As a D.O. and former chief resident 2007-2008 I would like to correct any misinformation about our program. We have accepted a number of D.O.s to our program in the past. There have been three D.O.s in the program in the last five years- two which were chosen to be chief residents (myself and another attending, both of us still work at Spectrum- GRMERC/MSU) In addition, there are at least 8 D.O.s that work for our group and with the residents.

Michigan does require a separate Osteopathic Internship 1+3 which is the same length of time required by Osteopathic EM Residencies in our state. It is true that our program does not waive this rotating internship prior to the three year residency.

This is incorrect, insofar as residency training is concerned. Regardless, the original quote that kicked off this thread is a quote from this year's rejection letters you all sent out.
