MSUCOM radiology?

I am about to begin school at MSUCOM in two weeks and was wondering what I would need to do to become a diagnostic radiologist one day. I know it is very difficult to match into this specialty, but I was wondering how feasible it is to achieve this goal if I attend MSUCOM, and what I should do to give myself the best chances of becoming one.

I work in radiology for a large hospital very close to one of MSU's campuses and we have a lot of DO's from MSUCOM in all specialties, including radiology. And my hospital isn't even the most DO-friendly hospital around here.

I would say as long as you put in the work and get the scores you need you will have a good shot.. especially in Michigan.

Do you have a better option than msucom (like an MD school?)? If not then why are you freaking out? DOs match radiology but they're above average scorers in general.

MSU matches grads into ACGME programs in neurosurgery, derm, integrated plastics and a plethora of other competitive fields, but not rads. No way. I think it's in the ACGME bylaws.

In all seriousness, you can definitely match rads if you do what was stated above: do well in school and on boards, have a genuine interest in the field, and maybe a little research if you have the opportunity.

MSUCOM has at least some brand recognition and a good reputation, even if it's not MD (heck handful of physicians I've spoken to have said it's better than some of the other schools in-state). Going into any competitive field, regardless of the school, requires high USMLE/COMLEX scores, strong LORs, research, strong PS, good interviews, etc. Basically, pretty much like med school admissions except even harder lol. Your best bet would be to aim for positions in Michigan or surrounding areas where the school is more known.

But c'mon, we haven't even started school yet. I'd just focus on adapting and doing well in class for now.

No it's not. Getting a great program is hard, just matching rads is not, there are tons of community programs. Stop worrying about your chances at anything from MSUCOM. If you have a different option (i.e. MD) then go there, if you don't have any other options then there is no point to worrying and all you can do is work hard to make your desires come true.

You'll probably change your mind like most of us will. Being a radiologist is VERY stressful, even by physician standards and the training is very long.
