Just curious if anyone (hopefully Quinn) can give any insight into the Mount Sinai EM program at Miami Beach. I'm a DO MSIII and this is the only AOA accredited EM residency in the Southeast U.S. I am very interested in it. Seems like there are a fair amount of spots there. How competitive is it for placement ? Thanks

Not sure of the competitiveness. However, statistically it will probably be easier to match into (probably 100-200 applicants IF THAT for 5 spots (or however many they have)). I would strongly suggest rotating there as a 3rd or 4th year student... it will give you first hand information and allow you to evaluate the program through YOUR criteria, not anyone else's.

Keep your ears open for any rumors... but take them all with a grain of salt.

Q, DO

The ACOEP website says that 24 spots are approved but only 15 are funded. What exactly does that mean? The last year you do not get paid. Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks

A hospital by virtue of its patient volume etc maybe approved for a certain number of potential residency training spots. The funding to hire residents to fill them all may not exist. Hospitals generally only staff positions which are funded. The program may fill the additional slots at some point should monies become available.

You'll find a lot of the DO programs are like that... that they don't fully fund all their approved positions. T'would be an interesting question to pose the PD on an interview.

I know a OGME-2 (PGY2) who went to Des Peres EM residency in St. Louis... she was there for 6 months when all of a sudden, they shut down the program. Oops, sorry, you got to find yourself another place to train. <-------- that sucks.
