I recently received my first med school acceptance letter. The letter requests that I respond within 3 weeks to accept their offer and "reserve a spot in the entering class." If I accept their offer, will I be obligated to attend their school, or can I still hold multiple acceptances (if I receive any more)? I just wondered if there were any med schools that don't follow the AAMC "traffic rules."

You can hold multiple acceptances until May 15th. Sending that letter does not mean you're attending.

Assuming you're talking MD schools you can hold multiple acceptances until May 15th. DO schools use different rules.

Thanks! That's what I assumed, but the phrase "reserve a spot in the entering class" threw me off 😛

First of all, congratulations & welcome to the Class of 2018! No you will not be obligated to attend their school if you accept their offer by reserving a spot in the entering class. May 15th is the deadline for selecting the school at which you'll be enrolling from the list of schools that have offered you an acceptance. Find out more here:

Can hold multiple. I'm holding both of mine and letting my mind think on it for a while. Important decisions take time.

Is that what they mean by 'refundable deposit'? If you put in deposits at two places you can request one back if you enroll in a different school?

As long as it's before May 15. After that, they keep the money, like if you get off a waitlist of a school you prefer.

The deposit is only to reserve your spot in the class. It's not a promise to go and the school(s) wouldn't hold you to it. The caveat is that you must only hold one acceptance after May 15th, or else the schools would "decide" for you if you catch my meaning 😉.
