Multiple reasons. I've been very pleased with many of the schools I've been accepted to, and financial aid considerations could sway me either way, and these won't be anounced until as late as April. Also, many schools are non-rolling so I won't hear from until March (UPenn for one). I've indeed turned down some interviews, and some acceptances to schools I know I would not attend (mostly out of respect for other applicants). If you're still waiting on an acceptance, I would expect massive waitlist movement this year, as I hear numbers that seem like people are applying to more schools.

Don't know where I will end up lol. I think we all need financial aid information to make a more informed decision. Unless you absolutely would not go to a particular school I would not hold the acceptance. If there is a slim chance I would still hold the acceptance for now.

Ditto...I'm waiting to hear about financial aid packages and I really like both schools that accepted me.

I don't think anyone does it to be malicious. It's just about taking as much time as you need to make the decision that you feel perfectly comfortable with. After that, people holding multiple acceptnaces should drop them and give spaces up to applicants still waiting.

honestly I don't think it matters whether you release them now or in March. I think schools generally overaccept off the bat knowing that a certain number will withdraw. Thus, if you were to turn down a spot now, its not like they'd go ahead and give it to someone else right away. Obviously you should never hold a spot at a place you won't go, but the more important thing to help out everyone else is WITHDRAWING CURRENT APPS. This really will make a difference as it will free up the committee to offer spots to people that really want to go there.
So . . . if you're accepted to a school you are dead set on going to, or if you know that there's no way in hell you'd go to a school that you have an active app at you should withdraw. I just hate the d-bags who keep active apps just to see how many schools they can get into. It's not fair to cause more waiting and agony to others just to stroke your ego.

Definately don't want to drop a space now only to find out on May 15th that I've made a terrible decision. I worked hard to get a spot so I'm going to try to make the best of it. However, I do promise to withdraw my application once I'm 100% sure I will not be attending a particular school.
