As of today MUSC has established a new EM residency program. The PD came to talk with us today (First year MUSC students) at a career luncheon and announced the news. They are obviously not in the Match this year, but interestingly enough they may be taking "highly qualified" residents via scramble this year. Other than that I have no additional information. Just thought I would let you all know. Charleston is a great place if you like lowcountry, history, or the beach. Cheers

Always surprised they didn't have a program. Good to hear.

Seriously. Did someone just answer a prayer I didn't even know I had? I've always LOVED Charleston 🙂. And I do miss the South!!

Oh and by the way people.. Miami STILL doesnt have an EM program.. Charleston is a GREAT CITY!!

The first program in SC WAS at MUSC, but closed. Then, USC in Columbia got their program.

When the MUSC program was being floated (again), they offered it to Greenville (90K visits/year adult), who declined it - the docs wanted to be clinicians first; then, it was shopped to Charleston, and the problem they were facing was not enough visits (40K required by ABEM). Looks like they got it, though!

Stillwater perhaps if you talk to them they should put something on their site about it.

An EM program at Miami would be a HORRIBLE idea. Go do an EM rotation at Jackson and find out for yourself.

How come?

Right so one of the largest cities in the country shouldnt have an EM program? Perhaps what you are saying is that Jackson is a dump (no argument) but I think it would help the population down there.

Wow, good to know! It obviously won't be applicable to me for a few years yet 😛 but I'm very excited by this, since I'm strongly interested in going into EM and I want the chance to move back to Charleston, my home town, ASAP!!! 🙂

I 😍 Charleston

WOW... Perhaps they should fix that.. that whole hospital is really messed up..

But still it seems to me that they need one.. they would have to be the biggest city in the US without an ED.

Actually Memphis is the answer to the above Q but if you look at "urbanized" area Miami becomes # 16 and is the right answer per the US census using info from 1990
