Hello, I am a third year currently planning on doing internal medicine.
STEP1: 218 (way below average I know, I know)
Average student at best (made 2 Cs my first semester of medical school, A's and B's since then)
Med school in Louisiana

Anyway, to get to my question, does anyone know if MUSC has a cutoff or minimum STEP1 score? I ask because my long term boyfriend is planning to rank MUSC #1 (he did very well on STEP1 and STEP2) and we are trying to go to the same place (marriage and all that jazz in the near future), but I am pretty sure there is no way I can get into MUSC but he is pretty dead set on ranking them #1 and I am concerned that if he matches there I will probably not be considered. They seem to be pretty competitive.

What is your experience so far and do you have any info that can help me out?
I am getting involved with 2 research projects this year so I will hopefully have a publication soon.

Their minimum score is a 220.
I am aware but I was wondering if anyone knew if they made exceptions, especially if an SO is there and if you do an away rotation. The program director told everyone at my boyfriend's interview that "you score is BS to me" but I feel like that he just said that because obviously if you get an interview it means your score was satisfactory enough.

Thanks for the info though.

You asked if they had a minimum step cutoff.

If they make exceptions? I doubt it. You should ask them.

I went to MUSC and know the PD pretty well. Disclaimer is that I did not stay there for residency and did not do IM. I would say that your best chance is to reach out early and try to do an away rotation. I would bust your butt for the rest of your third year rotations and try to kill Step 2. They certainly advertise the cutoff, but they are pretty good people and I am sure will give you a chance if you show genuine interest and look like a good match.

If you’re couples matching it doesn’t mean he cant go there and you go somewhere else nearby too. If you don’t rank a pair that includes him there and you somewhere else, then he can’t match there if you don’t.

I agree with above about doing an away there if you’re really interested though, that’s advice I have heard from PDs I have talked to. I’m also probably doing a couples match and we are likely going to be different tier applicants.

Thanks, we are not couple's matching though, different years. It would probably be way less stressful if we were able to.

Thanks, I am going to apply to do an away there right after I take STEP2 and do my AI (which will be July and August). Also I met with my advisor today who pretty much told us to get engaged (or at least say we are). I also am doing some research that should get published next year and I have a case report I'm working on so I hope that will help.
Who knows, my SO may not even end up there but he was a pretty strong candidate and he said that the PD really liked him so I guess we will see.

Your BF is the one who has options and he’s not trying very hard. There are good programs located in cities with multiple programs in multiple tiers where you would have a higher likelihood of living in the same location. Why wouldn’t he prefer one of those? Relationship is about commitment and compromise.
