I know MUSC shows priority for South Carolina residents, but I was wondering what stats do they look for in OOS applicants? Would only an OOS applicant with a 4.0 GPA and 20+ DAT have a chance? Thanks!

Yea, you would have a chance. No one really knows how they do it... They accept like 3-4 OOS students and all they say is they must be "highly qualified". You never know if those OOS students have connections; are alumni's children, kids with crazy stats; or just something specific the school is looking for. But if you have a 4.0 and a 20 DAT, then yea, I consider that "highly qualified".

Yeah I agree with what FutureDent020 said. Why don't you email or call someone at the school and find out more of what they look for in OOS applicants.

That's the thing.. I don't have a 4.0 or 20+. I've got a 3.57 sGPA, 3.55 cGPA, 19AA, 19TS, and 21PAT. I'm applying there because the school is in the southeast region. I was just wondering if there have been OOS applicants with lower stats than a 4.0 or 20+. I'm guesing I have no chance at MUSC, but oh well. I'm applying to several OOS-friendly schools and private schools as well. 🙂

Yeah I understand what you mean...and Charleston is a neat city.

I would say go for it. You never know what they are looking for. Do you have any research experience? I considered applying there for their combined program (DMD/PhD).

You're scores are exactly what I applied with, and I didn't bother with USC (and I am from NC). You should have a successful cycle (you will be granted interviews), but I can't shed too much light on the USC situation. UGA, UAB, Ole Miss, and USC are not OOS friendly, that's all I know. Now TN, UNC, and Kentucky admit more OOS students. UAB will admit some OOS students, but out of the 5-7, they seem to be from Georgia or another bordering state.

MUSC opened a new dental clinic in September 2009 and expanded its class size from ~56 students to 70 students. All the added class spots seemed to be OOS students, so I'm not sure where FutureDent020 is getting his stats on MUSC not being OOS-friendly?

My information comes from the ADEA guide. I wasn't aware they expanded the class size, but in the incoming class of 2009, so current sophomores, they only interviewed 28 OOS students and accepted 6. That is considered not OOS friendly. But if they are expanding the class size and accommodating OOS students, then that's a different story. Does the class of 2014 have 70 or will the class of 2015 be the first?

Use email, or phone, and lastly please use your common sense.

Class of 2014 is 70, so from here on out I think they're aiming for this size as the newly-expanded sim lab can only hold ~70 people.

Ive got a bunch of friends that go to MUSC and they told me there are ~15 OOS students in their 2014 class...$$$

I have an interview at MUSC this cycle as an out of state applicant. I applied bc I have heard good things about the school and area.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get in-state tuition. My wife would be working, and I would be willing to buy a place if that helps to get in state tuition.

Has anyone else heard pros and cons about the school?

No one out of state should apply there because:
A) They don't accept many OOS people
B) It is crazy expensive if you're out of state: 360k for all 4 years (2009 figure; excluding room & board)

That price is probably more now.

I'm an SC resident and I'll probably go to MUSC.

1) Charleston is an amazing city and region
2) MUSC is an amazingly underrated medical and dental school. Consistently graduates students in the top 10%, and I've never heard a bad thing about the school other than cost.

However, at my interview of 16, there were about 3-4 OOS students, and their stats were competitive, but not 4.0 or 23+ stats. I think there are about 15 slots for OOS this year. But I think you'd be crazy to come here from out of state. Almost $400,000 after tuition and fees? Unbelievable.
