I have been accepted to two dental schools this cycle so far, Midwestern University Illinois and LECOM, and am having trouble deciding between the two. They are both outrageously expensive newer private schools so money won’t be the deciding factor as I’ll have to take out huge loans for both. I would really appreciate it if any current dental students at either one of these schools could weigh in and talk about their experiences, pros/cons, or which one you would choose to attend if you had to choose between the two (not taking into account money and weather please) thanks!

LECOM tuition is 20k cheaper and their fees are 10k cheaper than MWU

Cost of living is probably lower in Illinois than Florida. I doubt 20k a year cheaper, but cost of living is something to always consider

My cousin had a terrible experience at Midwestern-IL (so some people do) - do not get it confused with the clinical power house Midwestern-AZ as they are not on the same playing field.

Go with the school that is going to run you 120k less and is P/F = LECOM

LECOM is no longer P/F. But price point is still better.

I personally know someone there and their clinical experience is stellar to say the least, I believe LECOM has some of their students go to their other campus in Pennsylvania in order to get patients - I interviewed there a while back.
This is actually not true. All 4th year students go to a satellite clinic because there is a greater need in those areas.. But it's better to do that, than sit around twiddling your thumbs. I'm for it. = more experience.👍

LECOM is actually not P/F anymore, but yeah the financial difference is really making me lean towards LECOM

And it seems the new dean who came over from MW Arizona is really trying to make it similar to that program. I came away quite impressed after my interview but maybe they just aren’t quite there yet

At the beginning of the year Midwestern IL got a new Dean who was previously the Clinical Dean at Midwestern AZ. I have a few friends in IL that have been telling me all the changes that are happening and they are for the better. It is becoming a clinical powerhouse just like AZ. It is going in a direction to be better than AZ and that is the Deans goal. Students have the opportunity to perform a huge variety of advanced procedures that students from many schools would only dream of doing. I'm sorry your cousin had a terrible experience, but that doesn't accurately reflect where the school is at today and where it’s going.

Isn't LECOM really cheap? I used to work in Ruskin. The cost of living is really cheap in Bradenton.

At less than 52k tuition and fees and in such a cheap cost of living area, LECOM is cheaper than many people's instate option.
What instate schools cost that much? That's crazy... now I understand why everyone thinks the difference between their school and the ivies cost wise is worth it. Mine is literally two thirds that.

My instate UIC would end up costing me more then lecom.

I did and that's where I'm seeing the 52k School of Dental Medicine Tuition and Financial Aid - LECOM Education System

How about you post yours.

Your Cost of Attending the School of Dental Medicine in Bradenton - LECOM Education System

what
More than 90K/year for UIC in-staters?
So probably closer to 58k to 63k for tuition and fees depending on the year. Not anywhere close to 94k. Still cheaper than my instate as well.
94K for the cost of attendance/tuition + fees is what I was referring to

Did you read the link? Lecom estimates ~94k a year.

@Mokapot I actually did some checking and looks like uic would be about the same as lecom for me, could be less If I decide to commute 30 miles everyday. And uic's notoriously expensive even for instaters.

@yasc that’s good to know thanks for looking into that. I unfortunately didn’t get into my state school but it’s good to hear that Lecom isn’t a bad OOS option. Relative to most private and OOS schools at least. And in your case equivalent to IS which is crazy
