So we are three weeks into school... and I've decided that my bio class sucks. the professor seriously stands in front of the class for three hours reading the power points he's made. Granted, I have no problem with lecturing, its the best way that i learn...but he's not lecturing he's reading. Not to mention the fact that he is not from the united states so i can barely understand him. Which isnt his fault... but it sucks for me. So i had been debating about dropping it and finding a new bio course but this fits in with my schedule oh so perfectly, but, I dont want to get stuck not learning anything.

Half the class brings their computer to play games and the other half sleeps during class...urghh..what to do..Obviously if i didnt learn anything this would hurt me later...would affect my ability to do well on the mcat?
*sorry about the rant*

We all get one of these in our undergrad career. I had a calc professor who lectured like Hitler, but hey I got through it fine.

This would NOT affect your ability to do well on the MCAT.

there are lot of professors who are like that. we wanted to learn but the prof are no good in teaching. does the prof doesn't know that the students are bored in his class. he should notice that. he should find way to improve his skill in teaching. i hope you still learn. try to give extra time studying on your own. sorry for you.

lol well he knows students are bored... he told us that we shouldnt copy the power point because its already online...but its not like we can skip class everyday...so he said come to class put your head on the desk do what ever...isnt that crazy!!

you'll be fine. everyone has had experience with crappy professors. It sucks but is still general biology. many of the classes you might take later actually do a better job of going over the details and specifics...which is more indicative of the level of material on the MCAT. (ex. genetics, biochem, evolution, physiology, anatomy, cell biology etc.)

epic fail

Um, if hes that bad why don't you just read the lectures and study the textbook on your own? In the majority of bio classes they're really not going to cover much that isn't in the textbook/powerpoint lectures. Just study those and do practice questions and old exams.

You're going to have your share of good teachers and bad teachers.

Welcome to life.

Agreed. There is nothing you can do about right now. Just go to class, suck it up, read the PowerPoint slides, read the book if you fee like it, etc, etc. if you want to get more out of the class, read the medical and science literature in the area of the topic you are learning about.....but reading outside of the book and lecture won't help with exams.

As the other person said, welcome to life.

Haha, welcome to every Bio class that has ever been taught. You don't learn anything, you just remember some crap and then take a test on it. It's far too easy of a subject, it doesn't engage the class and make them think.

Why would you drop it because you are not "learning"? College should be about having fun and partying it up! So, half of your class plays games and naps? That's basically what me and most people I know do all the time. I sometimes burp really loudly just for kicks during lecture. I never bring my computer for games, but I do sleep for like 45 minutes.

Chill, if you LOVE LEARNING, go pick up an encyclopedia or read or something. Just go to class, get your A, and get out. It's that simple.

The OP may have thought that college was going to be hard and that s/he may learn something new. Sure you learn about topics, but it is mostly memorization in the biological sciences. If you want a challenge, go into research....and I'm not just talking about bench research.

If college is all about partying and fun and getting the grade, why pay 20k+/year to go there? Try to attend all lectures and get your money's worth because having had my share of minimum wage jobs, I realize how hard it is to earn money that you will waste by not ''learning'', skipping lectures, and getting the most out of your college experience.

Work on your chess game against the computer. The reasoning skills will serve you well on the MCAT.

Seriously, no worries.

LoL, one time I had a similar professor. He'd even read the typos he forgot to edit in his 10 yr old slides, haha.

There's a bio prof at UCLA who is notorious for that. His powerpoints still say '01 on them.

My guess: his tests will be straight from the lectures, and there will be a generous curve b/c the 'average' student in the class is playing video games or at home sleeping. I've gotten some of my highest grades in classes that seemed terrible, and sometimes the best teachers give the hardest tests and students do all they can to impress the teacher - for LORs or just to get the best grade possible - which can goof up a curve. Stick with it, especially 3 weeks in.

Dr. Cooper, LS 2. My friend took him last fall and the powerpoints were exactly the same (typos and all) as when I took him and that was a few years ago.

Oh I've heard of that professor, but I had Shine for LS 2.

Isn't it obvious? Everyone and their dog goes to college and parties it up! Especially when it looks so cool to party in frat houses and tailgate drunk at football games. It's a great way to spend four years of your life completely drunk and have a degree to get some job at the same time! That is the primary purpose of college. It's like HS, you drug it up, and get a diploma. Same thing with college.

Wrong. I went to college to better my life. I didn't go to college because that is the thing to do after high school. Get a fricken clue.

This is a gift. Skip lecture, read the powerpoints on your own and enjoy your new found free time. I loved classes like that.

Yeah man, think of the possibilities. Now you don't actually have to pay attention, and you have a predictable schedule in front of you. This is an opportunity to enjoy life my friend.

ah, excuse the "yeah, man" part, I only just saw your forum ID.

For us in medicine, we pay 20k+ a year to learn tons of stuff irrelevant for the future for us to only forget it and to get a piece of paper that allows us to train in medicine.

You can easily get your money's worth by skipping lecture if the instructor is zero value added. It's Bio 1. Pick up Campbell and learn it. I never said that you weren't learning.

And believe me as I am knee deep in anatomy now, enjoy the partying and fun in college since your opportunities are few and far between in med school.

fwiw, at least half of med school lectures are the exact same way: powerpoint, lecturer speaks on something completely irrelevant to the notes, and most of the people sitting beside me are playing computer games on their laptops.

Nothing changes so get used to it now. 🙄

Yea... it just sucks cuz ive had lecture based classes before and i am able to totally get into them...for me its the best way i learn...lol guess ill just have to get used to it.

You gotta be careful though, professors like that may slip some random facts into their lectures that aren't on the powerpoints, and you could end up seeing those facts on an exam.

I've been told by some of his past students that he gives a review right b4 the exam and everything comes straight from there and the power points...everyone says its an easy A which is a plus...but i dont want to have a class later down the line that builds on knowledge you should have learned in bio 1....but guess ill be bunkering down withthe studies🙂

So you don't have to go to class, and its an easy A. But yet you still complain 😕. I'll never understand some folks

We all can relate...I once had a calculus teacher freshman year who didn't even speak english the whole time because she had just moved from Korea, fresh out of grad school, and hadn't picked up the language yet. I also had for my first semester of orgo a teacher who had come from a community college and would literally put the textbook on the docu-cam and read it word for word and go through the examples with us. PLUS he even said that for the final if we said good things about him in our anonymous course surveys that he would give us leniency in grading the final. This is ridiculous...thank goodness he didn't come back to teach the next year!

lol well i dont mean to complain but i dont want to get screwed later down the road. btw... i do have to go to class..they have a crap rule that if you miss a certain amount of hours of class then they bring you down a whole letter grade...meaning if i got an A i would get a B bc of absences...which is completely gay.

Lectured like Hitler? What? That's the most bizarre thing I have ever heard, especially considering that Hitler's greatest strength was that of his oration.

By the time you get to your MCAT studying, your freshman Bio and chem classes will be irrelevant. 2 years later you will forget much of the material you learned first year. You will most likely be using review books to review material specific for the MCAT.

I fail to see how one bad professor will ruin your MCAT score.
