Today I went into study (yes unfortunately my second time going in on a saturday) and my carral mate was there today. So, I walk in and immediately after i sit down she starts hee-hawing and taking in deep breaths and whatnot. Like I had no entitlement to be there on a Saturday. I left and went to the library...because I didn't want to get completely livid. So, later on I return and she started slamming her pens and notebooks down everytime she needed to put them onto her desk. I was so pissed. On top of that...she left her phone ringer on loud and took every call. It was completely amazing how inconsiderate she was. Finally, someone called my cell and i answered it (why be considerate of her) and she looked at me like I was being the a-hole! Can you believe this! 😡 😡 😡

Are you afraid to say something to someone who is being a jerk?
Stop being a doormat and tell this girl to cut it out. People frequently will do whatever they can get away with and the more you allow this to continue the worse it will get.

Hi there,
Invest in a pair of noise canceling earphones and study away in complete oblivion. I would put the cell phone on vibrate as there is no need to perpetuate rudeness and study to your heart's content in complete blissful silence while smiling sweetly. The cooler you are, the less the effect of her demonstrations. When no longer getting to you, you can ditch the earphones.

Remember, you paid your tuition the same as she did and you have every right to your study space. Don't waste your precious study time or energy on a jerk.

Good luck!

a combination of the above posters is the best advice: 1. tell her to stop and then 2. forget it, she's not worth ur time...

Pick up your cell phone, dial her cell number, and tell her to put a lid on it.

 I agree.

Although unlikely, it is also possible that she is doing this simply to upset you, so she can have the study space to herself.

What is a carral mate? Do you guys get assigned a space to share with someone to study??? This sounds horrible.

I was also wondering what a carral mate is.

Me three. Thats horrible if you get assigned a place. I like switching up where I study. For some reason it makes the studying less monotonous.

what the heck is a carral-mate?

Ditto. I have never heard of this before. What school is it?

This is exactly what's going on. Be polite and professional and ask her to treat you considerately--mention the specific behaviors like taking calls and slamming her books on the desk. If the behavior persists, report it to the person in charge of assigning carral space so that she can be disciplined or you can be reassigned.

A carral is a very small room with one or several desks (most of the ones I've seen are singles), often in a library, often with a locking door so that you can leave your books in it without worrying they won't be there when you return. It's like a closet-sized office without data or phone lines.

I would kill to have a carral at my school. 😛

More precisely, a carral is a desk, with or without a light source, with partitions around the space you sit in. It is usually not a room, per se, just a partially enclosed desk. I wish we had rooms we could lock our books in at my school, but as it is, the breakout rooms are not lockable because every student has a right to use them, and the carrals we DO have in the library are assigned by lottery. ~30 carrals to split between the 1st AND 2nd year classes. Great, huh?

I second the confrontation angle: say "look sister, pipe down with all that racket or I am going to report you to the carral police," or something equivalent. You know, use your own words, etc. But I would definitely speak up quickly and just say "knock it off and be considerate."

Man, study time is precious and I just get angry when people are bs'ing and chitchatting on their phones, etc. 😡

i dont understand this whole "assigned desks" or "carrals" or whatever?

please explain

Thanks all for your suggestions! 👍 The carrals at NEOUCOM at rooms varying in size that have a desk, lamp, and two lockers per student. They're pretty nice if you aren't being annoyed to hell. I studied there today and she was a lot better than she was yesterday. I guess she realized she was being a jackhole.

Army Doc has just pointed out the difference between an "open" and "closed" carral. Closed carrals (in a room) are difficult to come by at most schools ... open carrals are what you see in the stacks at the library. Didn't know that open carrals were ever assigned ... I'd love to have any carral, but alas, the great Welch Library of Hopkins has no such provisions ...

Glad your classmate is shaping up, chriseli. 🙂

Just one-up her until she stops-- start dropping books "accidentally". A few rounds of Robbinn's Path should shut her up.

is it that difficult to find a place to study? there should be a million spots. why are desks assigned??

I think its just a place to put out stuff...Kind of like how some schools have locker rooms for Anatomy lab...even though we have those too. 🙄

Complain to your CARRELL-mate (note spelling) to her face. Or study in the nice quiet library. You never know who's going to be on these boards, dear classmate.

She sounds like a b!tch! I would either use ear plugs or talk to myself out loud when studying.

I agree with the above poster who said just do whatever you have to do (bring earplugs, etc.) to ignore her commotion, smile and be polite and go on about your business. Do NOT leave and study elsewhere. That kind of behavior is intended to drive you away. But it takes energy on her part to keep it up, and eventually she'll tire of her little game and let you study in peace.

Just ask her directly to her face why she is acting weird when you are in the carrall. If she throws a hissy fit and annoys you time for plan B.

Plan B being urinating all over the carrall at 2am and then never coming back there again.

Scorched earth tactics when all else fails. If it worked for Sherman and Stalin, it can work for you! :meanie:

You never know...

NEOUCOM has so many places to study. Virtually all of the classrooms and nice meeting rooms are open all the time, for students to use for studying or group study or whatever, if they please. There's no reason to b*tch about a carrell-mate being in your carrell.

The urination idea is an interesting retaliation idea. Besides the fact that it would be rather "unprofessional" and may result in dismissal....

Just curious, were you the hall-monitor in high-school?

Praying that my last comment doesn't qualify for "dismissal",

Hell no. I guess I misrepresented myself: I LIKE the idea of urinating on someones belongings as retaliation.

NEOUCOM puts this huge emphasis on professionalism, to explain myself further...
