Hi! Looking for a little advice here...I just completed my first semester at the Community College near my home in Atlanta. This particular CC has a Transfer Admission Guarantee to all the public schools in GA. I chose this CC because I shattered my college GPA right out of high school, got married, had a baby, and this seems like the best way to make my way back onto the college scene. I've read (so many times) that it is not a good idea to take all prereqs at CC, but this CC encourages medical school hopefuls to complete their two year degree in Biology and then transfer to a four year school. This would mean that I would be completing the vast majority of my prereqs at this CC. So I guess I'm wondering whether I should do my Associate's degree in Biology and take all the med school prereqs at this CC or do my Associate's degree in something else and complete my med school prereqs when I get to my four year institution.
Thanks!

transfer asap and take as many classes at the university as possible...some med schools look down on CC classes

Edit: regardless of whether or not there is a difference in quality of education, there is a perceived difference amongst some people and that's all that matters since the control is in their hands

This is SDN gospel (don't take pre-reqs at CC) but it does not apply to students who start in CC and then move on to a university. It does apply to students at a university to run off to a CC (often in the summer) to avoid a weed-out class at their home institution.

Not to thread steal, but does this apply to a 4 year state college to?

So it's okay to take all my prereqs at CC because that is where I have started?

Take the prereqs only if they are part of your degree plan. If they aren't, transfer and take the additional ones at the higher institute.

For example, don't finish your degree and then stay an additional two semesters to take organic 1&2 there.

Don't take classes at GPC if you ever hope to go to medical or dental school.. take maybe history or electives. Don't take anything that can be counted as a science course. It's cheaper, but you do get what you pay for. Your education. Your call.

Interesting thread:

Adcom: take them, it's only a problem if you appear to be taking them there solely to avoid taking them at an university (ie: summer school)

Premeds: ZOMG! you'll never get into med school if you take them at a CC, you might as well just give up now if you've taken any of them any place other than a 4-year institution.

LOL, some people really overreact to CCs.

I'm taking some of my pre-reqs at my CC and will take some at a university. I think it's best to spread them out equally, since the most important thing is how well you do in them, not where you take them. Try to cram them all into the first two, or the second two years, and you're asking for trouble. I could try and transfer into a university now, but getting my AS first will give me a better chance at getting into a good university. I'd rather stay in my CC longer to eventually get my BA from a better university.

Also, CCs are NOT always worse off as far as how well they educate you. Many of my professors at my CC teach at neighboring universities (Georgetown, George Washington, etc). Actually, one of our professors at my CC is the Vice President's wife (Jill Biden). Research a professor before you take a class.
